Coaching movements (Premier League)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 9:43 am

The word is;

South Hobart - interviewed three applicants for their senior coaching job, ‘Spinner’ Atkins, Eammon Kelly & George Krambousanos. No winner as yet. Will South realistically contemplate turfing out a known quantity in Spinner, or will they choose to go out on a limb and appoint Krambo or Kelly? Spinner to stay, they wouldn’t dare risk upsetting one of their stalwarts.

Knights - are romoured to be wooing Franco Previdi, but it is understood Franco has commited himself to the State Development Programme. Unless Kelly is appointed to the South Hobart job I can’t see any change being required. Who else would coach Knights anyway? You need a big personality to check the other ‘big’ player personalities.

Kingborough Lions - I can’t see any reason why the Lions wouldn’t continue with the status quo (Dale & Iles) but there is a rumour that another may be added to the coaching structure to form a coaching ‘team’.

Taroona - the new comers have become a target for coaching journeyman George Krambousanos. ‘Krambo’ has been at most southern clubs in some shape of form but has generally moved on before season’s end due to a change in philosophy.

Clarence - are said to have reappointed Andrew Brown, and why wouldn’t they. Brown (along with a hard working Clarence committee) has resurrected the club. Browny will be joined by Michael Edwards as the director of their new Clarence academy.

Zebras - with Eddo gone to Clarence anyone could be a starter. Could Nick Lapolla step up to seniors or could a bolt from the blue in someone like Chris Hey perhaps.

Metro - have already appointed Brett Anderton. Struggle St. again for the Metro lads .

Olympic - listening to Emmanual Roussos at the Vic Tuting dinner I can’t imagine Farrell Shaw will be going anywhere. Sounds like a real ‘love in’ going on there.

Eagles - ‘Sparky’ Parker has put down a tap route and personally I think he has finally found a club that appreciates what the boy can do.

University - Nathan Robinson has been posted to Huonville Police district so will he have the time or inclination to continue coaching the Students? I suspect he won’t which will open the door for…?? Who knows. Will Westy make a comeback or will Mark Rapley don the coaching cap?

What’s the news from our Northern neighbours?

  1. Interesting comment re Parker’s coaching ability. Could you give us an idea on what Parker has achieved in his 4 or 5 years of coaching?Fair play to his playing ability but Eagles won a few games on the trot when the Knights had the title wrapped up and majority of other clubs had lost any real interest.
As for South Hobart, they would be nuts not to appoint Kelly, must be getting frustrated having the cream of the crop of youngsters but still very limited trophies in their long history. Kelly’s coaching ability is second to none in the state. Recent track record proves that.

  2. Ian has had very little opportunity to prove anything. He has a wealth of ability but has had very little opportunity to show it. It seems that he may now have the opportunity to show some of that. If experience proves otherwise then I will defer to your greater knowledge.

  3. As for Kelly to South Hobart…I can’t agree with you Juice. Nor can I agree with your assessment re. Kelly’s ability being second to none. No offence to Eammon (in fact I’m sure he would agree wholeheartedly), but the squad he has coached for the past two seasons could/should have won anything and everything on offer (they nearly did). Even I could have ‘coached’ this squad to consecutive premierships (and I’m no coach) but all power to Kelly, he had the ability to keep some ‘interesting’ personalities in check…on most occasions!!

It sounds as though Kelly will get the flick from Knights for next season anyway as a lot of the Croatian ‘financiers’ are demanding a ‘home grown’ coach to take the reins for Knight’s 50th year. Now THAT would be interesting as I’m not sure too many of the Knights boys would stay if Kelly was released.

What’s happening at Olympic for next year Juice? Any arrivals? Departures (besides McKenna)?

  4. Ric Peterson has been appointed coach of University and Matthew Gasparin, not Bret Anderton, is the coach of Metro.

    Comment by Walter Pless — November 18, 2006 @ 9:27 am

  5. Thanks Walter, of course it’s Matty Gaspain & not Bret Anderton at Metro…I knew that!! Oops!! :-)

Walter, can you give us some background information on Ric Peterson? (Are you sure it’s Ric Peterson & not Ric Patterson??)  :-)

  6. Sure. Ric coached the Premier League Reserves last season and the Division One side the year before that. He played for the club and worked his way up as a coach through the various ranks, culminating in his senior appointment for next year. He is a school principal down Kingston way in his other life.

  7. Sounds like the crazy genes kicking in at the Knights boardroom end again.
Not happy with two on the trot!
Nothing to report at Olympic’s end player wise, early start to pre-season due to MultiCultural cup and Greek tournament in Melbourne in January. Hopefully will avoid long term injuries in ‘07. Very promising group of youngsters coming up through the ranks, under 19s had a gun side last season. Most of those boys should step up into reserves and seniors comfortably.

  8. Was in Launceston over weekend , happen to notice on Saturday ex Soccer Tas CEO David Smith in deep conversation with Zebras president Michael pace and his offsider Nic DIgiovanni at the Country club maybe their is something to the rumour that has been doing the rounds for the last month !!!!

  9. Well put it this way…if Zebras can entice Smithy back to Tassie, they have more money than sense. He’s firmly ensconsed in NNSW so it would take an awful lot of money to bring him back even if it is to his spiritual home (although what a broken down old Pom has in common with a bunch of Italian’s is beyond me… :-) ). So let me put that one to bed for you Left Back. I think Zebras had a reunion of past players and committee in Launceston over the weekend.

  11. Update on Smithy the broken down old Pom who has a heap in common with a bunch of Italian’s , spoke to Zebras committee man last week whilst he was in Tassie on leave , he did consider coming back to Tasie , but not unless he had a full time job and yes if he had found a job time permitting would have taken on the Zebras job.

Nick Lapolla has been appointed coach for 2007.

  13. Got to put in a word for sparky, as a player I was lucky enough to have a bloke like him take me under his wing, as yet sparky has not done great things as a coach, but superman GUS wouldn’t have lifted any trophies with the teams sparky has had either. if sparky can keep hold of his current crop (tex and the like) then eagles may just show some form of the nighties in a year or too.

  16. Not bad this forum, great way to keep in touch with tas football.

    Comment by James Sherman — December 26, 2006 @ 11:07 pm

  17. Rhodes is a definite starter at Taroona, that will leave Glenorchy Knights & Kingborough Lions without ‘confirmed’ coaches for 2007.

Perhaps a touch of irony in the teams that finish 1 & 2 for the past two seasons don’t have confirmed coaches.

    Comment by Blackjack — December 27, 2006 @ 9:00 am

  18. I thought Matthew Shaw was coaching the University Prem team

    Comment by WLF — January 2, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

  19. Can someone please confirm, That Craig Jones has been asked to play in goals for Newtown Eagles. I know they are going bad in the keeper area, but I think he may be a tad old??? Is this true. Oh my god……
