Apologies to Barbara Steisand

I could see we were going to get into the whole nostalgic thing and I didn’t want to clog up the comments from the up coming games.

The funny thing was that I had a discussion topic planned precisely around these problem for next week. You’ve beaten me to it lads.

Feel free to discuss things past. What went wrong. Why it won’t happen again etc. on this post

What makes a professional…well, professional?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 6:15 pm

No doubt most of you will have seen Walter Pless’s comment on his blog this morning. It’s here if you didn’t (read before you continue). What I would like to know is; WHY?? Why can’t FFT provide this most basic of functions to the people who pay their wages. Frankly it borders on disrespect.

Collecting and posting match information is not difficult. There are many sources from which match scores can be gleaned. Clubs, referees, players, web masters, etc. Sure it takes a little while to gather, collate and write up but it’s hardly an arduous task. It’s all part of being and approaching these things in a business like fashion and displays that you actually care about the sport that enploys you. I’m not suggesting for a moment the office personnel don’t care but they do seem to have priorities that don’t run parallel to the public they are supposed to service. A minor aspect to consider, I can do it and I don’t get paid…they do!!

Today is Wednesday & FFT haven’t even got the scores up for the Olympic/Taroona or Uni/Knights game. Four teams are still listed as having played only one game and the competition’s top scorer isn’t mentioned ANYWHERE on the goalscorers list. FFT, that’s just poor, and as Walter says, there’s no point in blaming the clubs.

So what is the definition of professional, a word FFT subscribes to and professes to be?

A request from Walter Pless to all clubs

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 11:57 pm

I have been contacted by Walter Pless, through the Plebian administrator (the person/people who run both the Walter Pless on Football Blog and Blackjack Blog) on a matter that is becoming increasingly frustrating and tiresome for someone who is doing his utmost to promote our game and provide match reports. Walter has had some real difficulties getting information out of some clubs such as final scores, scorers, etc. so that he can then start writing reports for his blog and the Mercury. He has asked me to post something on this blog so ALL clubs are alerted to the problem. There are a few people who are extremely diligent but the rest is “like getting blood from a stone” to use Walter’s own words.

So here’s a personal plea from Walter:

At the completion of each game (or by 5.30pm at the latest) ONE person from both the home and away team should ring Walter with the following details from EACH game played at that venue on that day;

  1. Scores - final & half time
  2. Scorers - for your own team but if you know the oppositions scorer, or can obtain it from the referees, all the better.
  3. Standout details of the game eg. player send off, serious injury, etc.

His contact numbers are as follows:

  • Mobile - 0419 103 259
  • After hours number - 6249 8191

Please note:notifying FFT, electronically or otherwise, does NOT mean Walter will get these details. YOU need to ring him personally!!!

If you want to back up all the things you have mentioned on here about promoting the game then take this responsibility upon yourself, speak to your club President and inform him/her YOU will take on this important role.

To use a very popular advertising slogan by a well known sports shoe manufacturer - JUST DO IT!

Classic Blogging

Jesse Fink (shame about the name) writes a blog for Fox Sport on Australian sport and he submitted this ABSOLUTE CLASSIC piece. Top marks and gets my vote for blogger of the year.

I urge you to have a read and would be equally as interested to hear your feedback. Enjoy

Javanese Stoush in the Dust

STOP PRESS:  Have a look at Jesse’s latest installment aptly entitled;

Get set for Version 3 of the Hyundai Has-Been League

I just love this guys outlook on how the game should be played in this country. It’s also a very good grounding exercise. If this happens at the sharp end of the game on the big island, then are we expecting too much of the game in this little island.

Hell no, you’ve got to aspire to something!!!

Football on the airwaves

It seems that with a bit of pushing and prodding things are starting to pick up pace in terms of promoting the game here in Hobart.

A number of radio stations here are running previews, reviews and football discussions, and I am lead to believe there are more good things in the offering.

Our old friend David Woods continues with his broadcast each and every Saturday morning on Ultra FM - 106.5FM. Woodsy kicks off at 8.30am.

The newest promotional and information broadcast comes from our old mate Walter Pless who has been approached by HOFM - 101.7FM Walter can be heard at News Hour (each Friday on hour from 8am) with Mel Bush as part of her regular sports bulletin. Walter gives a brief run down of the top SPL games for that weekend. He had his first run last Friday and to hear his dulcet tones was like music to the sole.

We will have to tune into Walter on Monday to hear his review of the weekend games.

We wait with baited breath to hear of further developments in the promotion of our game and Blackjack has been informed there are a number of other things happening.

I think if we should congratulate ALL parties that have made these things happen. Don’t forget to give these FM stations a ring and congratulate them on bring the world’s greatest game to the masses in Hobart.

A rose by any other name…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 8:13 pm

Walter Pless in his latest comment on the league structures asks,

Why copy the idiotic system used in England’s professional set-up, where you have the Premier League (first division), the Championship League (second division), and then League One (third division) and League Two (fourth division), when everyone knows they’re divisions one to four?

I am inclined to agree especially when you consider the English leagues are full time and totally professional in their nature. The added bonus for these leagues is that it ’sounds’ more impressive when trying to squeeze the unholy dollar (pound in their case) out of prospective sponsors. To attempt something like that here in Tasmania would just be funny, if not bordering on sad and pathetic!!

My personal belief differs slightly to Walter’s as I believe the top league should be known as the Premier League and with all ‘ranked’ leagues under that in descending order. So the current Div.1 would become Div.2 and so on down to Div.4-5 or whatever. The only rule not to align to this formula would be that there would be one league known as the Veteran’s League, but it would be a true veteran’s league, not some mickey mouse league where clubs stick the 26 year old who suddenly decides he’s going to make his debut as a fottballer.

So what are your perceptions? Should we follow the EPL professional example or follow the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle and just be honest about it?

There you go Corey, go for it!!

Against my better judgement I put this topic up for discussion. It is an open forum. I’m not familiar enough with the subject to offer any kind of informed or educated opinion but that won’t stop most on here either!! :-)
