Tommy Fotak reports on the Emirates Tournament & the Stadium

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 10:25 am

Hey guys,

Firstly apologies for the tardiness in getting these pics to you but I’ve been flat stick with work and catching up with old mates.

img_0733.jpg

So the Emirates tournament. Firstly the stadium is amazing, there’s not a bad seat in the house, there are no obstructed views, apparently this was a requirement of the design, and rain from any direction will struggle to hit any seated patron. Every seat is padded! It’s an amazing venue, I’m a total Liverpool fan and after having seen the preliminary plans for Stanley Park am very excited and if it’s anything like the Emirates it will be amazing. I saw the remnants of Highbury and would love to have seen a game there because of the fields proximity to the stadium.

Walter I know you’re a reds man too, and Blackjack I get the feeling by your bias against Everton you might be as well but am not certain. I haven’t been able to nab tickets to Liverpool v Chelsea this weekend, first home game and top four match so demand was high, a colleague is allegedly family friends with the former chairman (take that with a pinch of salt) but given the profile of the game it fell through, however I have placed a request for tickets to the game against Derby so fingers crossed that will happen. If so it will be a football mad weekend as I’ve got tickets to Arsenal v Portsmouth the
day after.

img_0796.jpg img_0806.jpg img_0804.jpg

So on to the games. Valencia were basically rubbish. They were very composed in defensive areas when in possession and moved the ball forward in slow considered movements gaining ground and sweeping the ball all over the park in nice triangles, however this was in part because PSG sat back to hit on the counter. Valencia were clueless in the forward third in terms of breaking through PSG, who were fairly well organised and looking to hit on the break, and they threatened to
score every time they did. David Villa looked disinterested (first game of the pre season) but Morientes looked great, I don’t think he’s found the combinations he needs since leaving Madrid (Monaco aside) but he moved well, looked dynamite on the ball and almost made too good positions. I realise that’s bad english (and I’ve had some wine tonight) but he was always in places where if you froze the game you’d realise the play should head, but it didn’t. On the breaks PSG were
awesome, they were fast, individuals carried the ball so well, it was delightful they swept the length of the ground through Valencia like it was a training drill, their wide players were amazing ball carriers in terms of speed and confidence to take on players, up to two or three at a time, brilliant to watch in that regard. PSG were worth the win, they played smarter and were definitely more interested.

copy-of-img_0760.jpg img_0736.jpg img_0740.JPG

Arsenal v Inter was a better game overall. Arsenal were guilty of over playing and attempting to walk the ball in the net. Gunners fans were calling for shots as soon as they got the ball anywhere near the eighteen, the Gunners themselves wanted to get it to six yards before pulling the trigger, the truth was they only needed one or two more passes from the point the fans wanted, and one or two more passes before they wanted. Bit of a vague description but I think you
understand. Van Persie and Hleb were both very guilty of bad decision making, taking on players when passing was a better option and vice versa. Fabregas looked class, no matter where he got the ball he seemed to have an eternity and seemed to make effective passes to team mates. By effective I don’t mean maintaining possession I mean that within two passes the ball could be in a goal threatening position, everytime he touched it I was breathless, perhaps it was my imagination playing out what I wanted to happen, but I honestly believe that he was a couple of steps ahead of the rest of the field - perhaps Morientes should join Arsenal? - except for one player. I have been a massive fan of Figo forever, and want to call one of my sons Fitzroy Luiz Figo Fotak at some point :) after him, he was simply brilliant. He looked overweight and slow but every time he touched the ball Inter looked dangerous. Some of his passes were exquisite
and his vision was amazing, I’ve watched a lot of him on TV but in the flesh you really appreciate what he can do. I don’t think I can sing his praises enough and as I said he was overweight, slow and in preseason! He was relieved of defensive duties and seemed to almost be playing in the ‘hole’, a term I dislike but I won’t elaborate on, we all have our opinions on various facets of the game. Sitting there he had acres of space, and when he was compressed out of it he moved into areas that just seemed to open up, really I was mesmerised by how this guy just found room wherever he went.

img_0745.jpg img_0751.jpg img_0747.jpg

So it was all decided in the end by a piece of brilliance by Van Persie who, to be fair, hadn’t offered much before that. If he can deliver that ability with a bit more intelligence and consistency he will become a great, he has the assets, including the Corey Smith looks - but better teeth ;) - he just needs to improve his decision making.

img_0724.jpg

Apologies I realise this was a bit of a rant.

To all Bloggers

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 7:12 pm

I have had a couple of e-mails over the past few days expressing concerns that the Blackjack Blog appears to be moving away from the support of local football and focusing on the English game.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Blackjack will continue to have a primary focus on the local game but the season here is starting to wind up and I want to retain the support of our bloggers so I am setting up a ‘bifocal’ approach for the last couple of weeks so once the local competition finishes up and discussion on the local game dries up there is still something to come back to.

We Tasmanians tend to pull down the shutters once a season is over and this is the same when we go from summer into winter as it is from winter into summer. We seem reluctant to discuss anything that is out of season. So any discussion on the local game is likely to become a bit dry and boring, and this is no good if I want to retain people’s interest.

A recent poll conducted on the blog overwhelmingly voted in favour of discussing EPL matches, as well as having ‘fun’ options such as the EPL Fantasy League, A-League & EPL tipping. The EPL fantasy League has had close to 100 people who have registered to play so there is certainly interest there.

But I want to reassure ALL readers, I guarantee the Blackjack Blog will continue to support the local game until season’s end and come January, we will launch right back into the comings and goings, etc. of the new season. I will also be keeping my ear to the ground and if anything crops up that deserves discussion or our interest I will be aiming to have it FIRST on this blog.

The Blackjack Blog has been built on support of the local game and there is NO WAY I will see that support abandoned.

On a slightly different tangent - The Blackjack Blog is not paid for any advertising nor do we pay for any information. This blog is run for the readers and all information comes from it’s readers. No money or favours are exchanged for information in either direction.

In the New Year Blackjack will be expanding as I now have 1-2 people who have volunteered to assist in keeping the blog ticking over. So Blackjack will soon become The Blackjack Trio!! Hopefully this will give better service to all aspects of the game including more information on the lower leagues and to the Women’s game.

Thanks for your continued support

A-League brass considering B-grade competition

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 5:00 pm

Michael Lynch
August 14, 2007

AUSTRALIAN soccer chiefs will this week discuss the establishment of a reserves competition or national youth league to help A-League clubs get game time for players who are not in their first team squads.

The Football Federation of Australia board will meet in the wake of a management restructure overseen by new chief executive Ben Buckley, who wants the organisation to focus more sharply on player development in the elite side of the game and at the grassroots level.

An issue that has become a major problem for A-League clubs — which can now have up to 23 players on their squad list — is what to do with up to eight players who do not get a game each weekend. With no reserves competition, these players find it hard to stay match fit and can struggle to make an impact if called up because of an injury crisis.

Buckley says the FFA is considering a range of options to try to fix the problem. One is to allow A-League players to be aligned to state league clubs and, if not required, play for them instead. That is how the issue is managed by the West Australian and South Australian AFL clubs, where players who are not selected or are coming back from injury can regain form.

Another would be to establish a national youth league, which existed during the former National Soccer League, where A-League clubs could put some of their senior players in youth teams alongside some of the best juniors in their state so they could play when not picked in the first team.

A more radical approach would be to allow A-League teams to have six players attached but not under contract, as the AFL teams do with their rookie lists, and allow them to field a composite side using their own players and some of these rookies in the various elite state competitions.

“A national youth/reserves league is firmly on the agenda,” said Buckley. “It won’t be in place for season three of the A-League, but it’s in the plans for future years.

“We will be writing to A-League clubs to get their views. An AFL-style rookie list would be one option. Having squads up to 30, there would be an age commitment to that, but there are a number of issues that need to be addressed.”

Under the management restructure, a football development unit will be established, to be overseen by current high performance manager John Boultbee.

Its job, says Buckley, is to “create a national football development plan looking outside the A-League and the national teams. It will have an emphasis on building the numbers at grassroots but also work on coach education programs and referee development”.

Advocaat next Socceroos coach

August 14, 2007

DUTCHMAN Dick Advocaat has agreed terms to become the next coach of Australia, and he will be unveiled before the end of the year as Graham Arnold’s successor.

EURO 2004 NETHERLANDS Football Federation Australia is believed to have concluded negotiations with Advocaat, but it will delay a formal announcement, at the coach’s request, until the end of the Russian league championship in November.

Arnold is likely to be asked to lead Australia in friendlies against Argentina next month and China in October before handing over the reins.

Advocaat has made it clear he wants to do the right thing by his club, Zenit St Petersburg, as it chases the Russian title.

A January start date will allow Advocaat to finish the Russian season and have a short holiday before taking the Socceroos’ reins ahead of the World Cup qualifying campaign.

It is unclear whether Advocaat will bring his own No.2 or retain Arnold as assistant coach.

Arnold has a contract with FFA until 2010, but his availability for the senior team depends on the Olyroos’ quest to reach the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.

He will mastermind those six games starting later this month and, if successful in qualifying for Beijing, he will be hard pressed to combine the preparations for such a tournament with the responsibilities of assisting Advocaat.

Advocaat, a renowned disciplinarian, will have the task of rebuilding the unity and purpose displayed by the national squad under fellow Dutchman Guus Hiddink.
