Young-star of the week - James Sherman

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 11:44 am

sherman2.JPGSherman (blond hair) on tour in Samoa with Australian Schoolboys.

James Sherman is about to play in his first Victorian Premier League Grand Final this coming weekend with his side Whittlesea Zebras (he can’t get those black and white stripes off his back). Whittlesea’s opponent will be the skillful and determined Melbourne Knights (the former team of Socceroo Mark Viduka) and if you review the results over the season Whittlesea are in with a red hot chance.

Sherman has done well since leaving Tasmania and has now created a little niche for himself in arguably the toughest league in the country.

This interview was done over two weeks ago (I’ve been waiting for a few pictures which the little bugger hasn’t sent me) when Whittlesea were about to take on Matthew Sanders Green Gully. Whittlesea duly won that match 2-1 and then went on to play minor premiers Preston Lions (watch tonight’s Premier League show on Aurora) in the semi final. The Zebras managed to defeat Preston 2-1 with Sherman laying on the winning goal to win their way into the grand final. Read that story HERE

I am sure all Blackjack bloggers will wish James the best of luck for the grand final.

FULL and COMPLETE B&F counts now available

Pieter Oosterloo (Riverside Olympic) Riverside Olympic’s Pieter Oosterloo took out the prestigious George Dale Medal at the Northern Football Federation of Tasmania’s annual award presentation at the Grand Chancellor, Launceston last night.

Despite the Riverside team finishing down the competition table Oosterloo managed to poll 21 points which was three ahead of Northern Ranger’s Thataetsile Kakadumane. ‘TT’  polled in second place with 18 points but was denied the official podium finish due to a suspension during the season. This left a three way tie for the official second place. Burnie United’s Ben Crosswell and Somerset brothers Bobby & Casey Eaves filled out the runner-up minor placing.

DVD of 2007 season

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 10:54 pm

I am looking for STRONG expressions of interest from people or clubs who would be interested in purchasing a DVD of episode 1-14 (plus two EXTRA episodes) of the Tassie season (includes Northern & Southern games) as filmed and edited by Stefano Lufti (Mr Video) & Justin Smith and aired of the Australian Premier League Show on Aurora.

The package will include TWO duel layered DVD’s and a whole host of extras (bloopers and such I would imagine).

Pricing has not been set at this point in time but it will be in the ball park figure of $30.

Can you indicate by entering in the comments section of this post as to how many you would be willing to purchase so it can be ascertained if it is actually economically feasible to go ahead. We only want an indication from those with a strong interest.

Clubs also can raise their interest and I would imagine there would be a discount for bulk purchases (tbc).

Needless to say, this will be a first class production.

SENIOR TASMANIAN WOMEN’S STATE TEAM TO PLAY IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The senior Women’s Tasmanian State Team will be resurrected this year, after Football Federation Tasmania announced that a team would be selected to play in an Invitational Tournament in Adelaide in November.

The tournament will feature a number of state teams from around Australia and will provide an opportunity for some of Australia’s best female players to play against their interstate counterparts.

This is the first opportunity Tasmania has had to play at this level in many years, and coaches, players and officials are looking forward to the opportunity to play at an interstate tournament.

With no National League or National Championships for women currently included on the football calendar, this tournament is the only opportunity for states to compete against each other and provide a higher level of competition outside their respective Premier Leagues.

“We have been looking to re-introduce senior state teams for Tasmania,” said FFT CEO Martin Shaw, “and now with this tournament being approved we have been able to do that for both the women and men this year, which is very pleasing.”

“Having just completed the North-South Challenge Series, we will be able to use that as the basis for the selection of our squad to travel to Adelaide.  The Series was closely fought, so the selectors will have a difficult time settling on a final squad.”

The tournament will run from November 25th until December 1st, and while not all states will attend, it is expected that the playing standard will be high, and will be a good opportunity for the Tasmanian players to test themselves at this level for the first time in many years.

“With the introduction of a Tasmanian Institute of Sport football program for women, it is hoped that in future years Tasmania will be able to attend tournaments such as this and challenge for a place in the final, as well as having players identified to play at a national level,” said Shaw.

“Attendance at this tournament is a very important first step in that process of being competitive at that level.”

With both the Men’s and Women’s State Teams to play over the next few months, it is expected that FFT will announce both squads shortly.

Rumour Mill

Ok here’s the post a lot of you have been looking forward to all year. The comings and goings!!! The silly season. The creditable and the total BS. The believable and the just plain idiotic.

Who’s going where, why and how??

Are any players going to the mainland or are any coming back?

Go on, do your worst!!

I can start you off by stating Spinner has stood down at South Hobart but that’s nothing too surprising. Three names pop up as replacements: Eamonn Kelly, George Krambo & another I’m not sure about (or don’t wish to say).

Jon Ladic has also been linked with a move to South while South are rumoured not to be entering a Div.1 team in 2008.

Over to you guys. BTW, I won’t post the patently stupid posts! :-)

Matilda’s World Cup

QUARTER FINAL

De Vanna 36′            Formiga 4′

Colthorpe  68′          Marta 23′ (pen)

                               Cristiane 75′

Brave, brave ladies!!! I take my hat off to the entire team for a wonderful display of women’s football and I thank you for showing the detractors that women’s football can be fast, skilful and entertaining. In many cases far more entertaining that some men’s football.

Now, will we see a women’s A-League?

MatildasGame Three

Australia  2  v  Canada  2

McCann                    Tancredi

Salisbury                   Sinclair

The Matildas scraped through to the quarter final round for the very first time when captain Cheryl Salisbury equalised in injury time. Canada started the match scoring the second fastest goal in women’s World Cup history recorded at 32secs.  The Matildas finished second in their group after Norway thrashed Ghana 7-2. The reward for our brave Aussie girls is to meet the winner of group D who at this stage looks likely to be Brazil.

Game Two

Australia  1  v  Norway  1

De Vanna              Gulbrandsen

Super sub Lisa De Vanna did it again after coming on at half time and giving the Matildas the equaliser against a very physical and skilful 4th ranked team Norway. Australia need only a draw with Canada in the final match to progress to the next round.

Game One

Ghana  1  v  Australia  4

 ??                     Walsh

                         De Vanna 2

                         Garriock

A good start for the Matildas and also an historical one as this was their first ever World Cup victory despite having appeared in the past two world cups. The score actually flattered Ghana as Australia had at least another 3-4 very clear and good opportunities.

Walsh & second half replacement, De Vanna was fast and stylish.

Saturday’s match will be a good test as their opponents are the world’s fourth team, Norway.

SBS will be broadcasting all of the Matilda’s group matches as well as the semi-finals & final.
