  1. From the Kingborough club:
Kingborough has developed a ‘Coaching Team’ consisting of Tim Dale, Warren Iles, Geoff Freeman & Charles White. Another name, is to be added if negotiations go well, reputedly that of a “very experienced” player. This coaching team will take charge of Kingborough’s considerable senior team commitments.

The reason such a team has been developed is that both Iles & Dale have commited to playing while Freeman (former successful coach of Christian Utd & Kingborough’s Div.1 teams) will be match day coach. Although unorthodox, the arrangement should work well as all four are good communicators and best of mates. It should also ensure that a playing style will be achievable across the entire senior arm of the club, something not seen at too many clubs in Southern Tas.

  2. Corey Smith returns to Metro, maybe, if he shows at training (thanks Bucky), but the stronger word is that he’ll stay Knights. Sweeper again maybe Corey??
Metro have also splashed out on bring two players (and their families) to Tasmania, from W.A. I wonder if they have an escape clause in the event of relegation? Wouldn’t it be better to spend this money on retaining the youngsters they have coming through the ranks?? (just a question)

James Symonds (Zebras) out for the best part of the season, if not all of it, due to undergoing knee surgery for a long standing injury problem.

Who, what and why will cause Olympic to improve so dramatically this year? I only ask because no one has seen any substance yet just a lot of talk - once again, just a question!! :-)

Kingborough about to sign a couple of “dark horses” (their words, not mine). And it looks likely that Sanita will stay for another twelve months but will join Sunshine George Cross next year.

Nathan Pitchford may also be signed to Sunshine Georgies under similar circumstances to Sanita except he may go this year and be loaned out to a Vic. Div.1 team, according to father Steve, but he’s still to make up his mind conclusively.

Sunshine George Cross to be renamed and will become Tasmanian Georgies minus the $15M price tag (just joking) :-D

  3. K. Emmanueli turned up to a Zebras pre-season training. J.Symmonds yet to make a show but turn outs of 20+ players to each training makes for an impressive squad for Nick Lapolla to choose from for the upcoming tournament in Launie. Launceston, Devonport, Zebras and Gladesville Spirit will be competing for this Pre-Season title. Gladesville Spirit will be favourites as they have players that make appearances for the Central Coast Mariners.

  4. Blackjack
Based on last season, there really isnt a lot of difference between say 2nd place and 8th place. The main one being consistency.
Having played in matches against Knights and Kingborough, and same with South and Uni(3rd and 4th - 1 point behind) the games were fairly even and at times these teams were outplayed for more than a half of soccer but were never killed off hence they finished up with a draw or narrow win.
Eg Knights were sometimes in games they didnt deserve to be because they had firepower upfront etc.
Olympic’s biggest problem last season no doubt was player availability. Any team would struggle losing 7 key senior players for about half a season through injury, work or study commitments and another through travel. Im sure other clubs had their share of bad luck like this but probably not to this extent.
Barring some major bad luck again, i guarantee a rise in the ladder for Olympic. Only 3 points separated 8th and 5th(Clarence). One win difference between a supposed good season for Clarence/Eagles and a supposed terrible one for Olympic. Must be based on the history of the clubs, lot more expectations on Olympic then say Clarence.
Would say Zebras would be in the same boat.
Bring on the Summer Cup, Only 5 weekends away! Talk is cheap, actions speak louder!

  5. Don’t let the facts spoil a good story Blackjack. I can’t recall signing any cheques to pay for players from WA and their families to come down here. Hey, but, I’m only the President. How would I know ? I will make sure that just to keep all of the negative people happy, whowever we get (and yep, wer’e actively pursuing players from interstate), we’ll put that clause in the contract about relegation. I wouldn’t have thought that was something our club is particularly focussed on. Probably one of the drawbacks of being positive I guess. Happy to take on board any suggestions you might have about how we “spend money” on reataining the youngters we have. Last year we had around 250 kids registered from Under 7s to 14s. We spend money on them with things like sending them to coaching clinics in Vic, paying for clinics to be conducted for them down here, having them placed in Vic Soccer Institute teams that have participated in overseas tours and so on. The only negative that I have seen come out of that is unfortunately for a minority of those kids repay nothing and end up at clubs that do little to provide a pathway for kids in their club. Any way I like to keep positive, and I think I’m getting a bit away from that here, so I’ll finish up by saying at Metro we’re fairly happy at the moment with our coaching staff, with the great numbers at training as those of you that have been checking us out would know, and are looking forward to the season starting.

Enjoy your column, it provides a great service. Keep up the good work.

    Regards

    Greg Saunders

  6. My Kingborough source didn’t inform me of this news (this was broken to me by a South Hobart stalwart) but it seems as though Adam Hinkley, Kinborough’s other striker has decided to play Aussie Rules. Not aware of why but one has to wonder what his motivation must be.

Hinkley’s decision may cause a tactical problem for the Lion’s coaching team. Who will partner Sanita up front, if indeed, Sanita stays for another season?

Can the Lion’s offer a suitable striking alternative? The first option would obviously be Warren Iles but can the old fellow keep the body together for a season? It might be best to use Iles as sparingly to get the best out of him.

There is also a rumour that Wade Barker has returned from overseas and is seriously considering making a return. This news will be welcomed by the Lions.

Speaking of returns, Adam Powell is supposed to be back in training…but I’ll take this one with a grain of salt. ;-)

  8. i have it from a pretty good source that corey smith is a definate at knights this year again. He has trained every night with them and has no intention on leaving.
I am with you blackjack on the olympic situation cause unless they pick up otto rehhagel as coach and a few of their greek charges from the euro then they will probably struggle once again. They have no viable attacking options and they have lost 5 starting players from last season including one of the best keepers in the league in mike mckenna and they have only picked up a knights reserve player as replacement but good luck to them. Their best player would be Fletchjer Tracy which shows the quality of their squad because despite what walter writes he isn’t blessed with too much natural ability.
If it is true what you say about jaymes symmons it would be a shame cause zebras would miss him at the centre of their defence but from what i hear they may have some handy replacements.
Once again Andrew Brown is trying to recruit everyone and anyone to clarence utd and they may test a few people out this year and its a credit to their club the way it is run now considering where it was 5 years ago.
Also is it true bart beecroft may venture to sunshine george crooss soon as well? jono ladic obviously their already and sanita and pitchford. Please keep me updated on these.

Keep the column going its not bad at all!!!!!!!

  9. Dear mikael

sounds like you are privy to alot of information. Could you please name me the 5 starting players that Olympic has lost. Considering Olympic’s performance last season, I think it is realistic that some changes need to be made in order to improve. Whats the use of retaining dud players?

  10. I hear Corey Smith has definately not been back to Metro, and Metro have supposably averaged 25-30 heads per session, they say there are some new faces but no movements from Metro to anywhere else.
That’s got to be good news for a club that has struggled the last few season’s & they have good numbers for social teams as well……..
Matthew Gasparin & his coaching staff would have to be happy with that to date.

  11. I think Mr Saunders in his open statement to the blog has given a great insight into the way a club , continually being written off by what seems a major percentage of this blogs correspondents , is going about it’s business , survival isn’t the issue it is about fostering the future generation - making business decisions - and trying to ensure the club is on good financial footing.
I for one hope Metro prove people wrong - sure they may well struggle but in all my time in football they have never been easy beats, disredard at your peril!

  12. metro had 1 good year in 2003 when they made the finals series in wich they beat every team that year in the leauge atleast 1nce

    Comment by mike — January 23, 2007 @ 6:57 pm

  13. Its as simple as this… Corey Smith is staying at Knights, Sanita is already back from where ever the hell he was trialing, Ladic is back, Robinson has moved with Tony Atuso to South Hobart. Olympic have a new president and possibly a new coach?? South Hobart are the team to beat if they dont win it this year they never will. Knights wont be far behind they may even still win it but it will depend on how many tiomes they get sent off. The next team will be about 10 points behind. Clarence and Newtown will be the big improvers as long as Parker and Brownie can keep their boys motivated. Its hard when the FFT gets rid of the finals… WHAT IDIOTS. the only league in Australia without finals, no wonder we are so far behind. olympic have lost some players and will be crap, If thjey didnt have Peter Tsakiris or Tracey they would get relegated. they just played in the Greek tournament in Melbourne and got smacked 6-0 and 6-1 and only turned up with four players to their last match. if Brandale and his mates get fit out at Zebras they could cause some upsets and will depend on who plays in goals. Manielle is still one of the best keepers and if ferguson decides to stop being so soft it should be a good challenge. Metro… Who knows? They have rang up every player in southern Tassie this year and offered a bit of cash… then there is Taroona… only tiome will tell! they have only really picked up Mike Mckenna and he will have to do everything to keep Taroona from going back down. He had a crap season at Olympic last year, but if he gets fit there is not a better keeper.

    Comment by Iknoweverything — January 24, 2007 @ 2:50 pm

  14. You have to admire clubs like Clarence and Metro who are very focussed on developing the youth for the years to come. They may have struggled a bit over the past years but will be a force before too long, providing they can keep their good players. Sadly several of the larger and more traditional soccer clubs in Southern Tas have neglected this policy and will suffer if they don’t change their attitude.
Providing that skilled coaches are avalaible , these new academies must seem a more viable option for parents rather than having to fork out $3500.00+/- per year to be developed in the state and southern teams.
Players from the U15 state side return to their respective clubs as for some unknown reason Football Tas don’t have any rep sides until U19’s.
Also heard on the grape vine a couple of senior Olympic players were moving on.
Metro have picked up at least one quality Knights player.

    Comment by sj — January 26, 2007 @ 4:55 pm

  18. “…the majority of the Southern members of the 2006 State U/15 team will be playing at Clarence in 2007″. If this is a fact and as SJ seems to be fairly well situated in terms of news from FFT board and office, I can only assume this news is as good as ‘official’

Well, isn’t this news a surprise?? NOT!!!

To say this news disappoints me is a HUGE understatement.
So who needs a club based development programme?? You just put the shiny and glittering objects (money facilities, etc.) in place and they’ll all come to you.

So much for working hard to implement and establish programmes that assist in bringing your kids up to a high standard, because they then become attractive and appealing to Mr Abela and his state wonder programmes and which time they are then removed and ’sold off the the highest bidder’. I’m not having a go at Clarence here just the FFT programmes. Good luck to Browny & Micky Edwards, they had the bells and whistles that were able to entice these players to the Eastern Shore, so all power to them.

The entire FFT development programme, in the long run, will reward clubs that have no desire to waste money on development. Just have buy the next batch of youngsters and bingo, future secured.

    SHAME FFT SHAME

    Comment by Lionheart — January 26, 2007 @ 6:53 pm

  19. Lionheart - before you go “shaming FFT” why dont you ask the boys why they have gone there. When the full-time state program was initiated it was made clear that the boys were expected to return to their original clubs, however FFT has no power to make that happen. The club, by making itself attractive in terms of the standard of coaching available and playing opportunities, is the one with the power to keep their players. If any clubs have lost players, (and I havent seen any registrations for 2007 so I cannot confirm), then they should see if their players will tell them why they have left - and take measures to make their club more attractive to those young players coming out of state programs. (and money does not seem to be an issue).

    Comment by sj — January 27, 2007 @ 10:23 am

  20. FFT have given them the vehicle to turn their backs on club loyalty. As I said to Mr Abela, FFT will create a group or mercenaries being ’sold’ off to the highest bidder (and I’m not specifically refering to cash money). That is why FFT should be shamed.

The statement that the boys are ‘expected’ to return to their clubs is just plain laughable. In this case it is believed (ask South Hobart) that the team has been advised (by someone employed by FFT) to stay together as a team for the benefit of their own development.

There is now NO reason for clubs to spend time and money on developing juniors because they then become attractive to the FFT ‘development programme’. The players (if good enough) are then selected in full time squads (at U/13 level) and that is probably the last time the clubs will have the benefit of producing these kids in the first place.

And what happens to the kids that don’t make these squads?? Is this a case of FFT catering to the elite level at the expense of the rest?? These kids get the message that they aren’t good enough rather than FFT spending time/money/effort on them. No, the clubs are expected to pick up this aren’t they??

Congratulations Mr Abela & Co. you have created an elite system when 5% of the players in this state get 95% of the financial assistance. And you do the clubs NO favour either.

    Shame FFT Shame

    Comment by Lionheart — January 27, 2007 @ 11:21 am

  21. The reason that Clarence has so many u-15 2006 state players trying out for their youth academy is because Clarence has the best set-up for junior players for 2007, no two ways about it.
It doesn’t take much to figure out why they want to play for clarence.

    Comment by Keeper — January 27, 2007 @ 5:49 pm

  22. What clubs actually place specific importance on their youth and development, is it a team placed thing eg:the u/19s or is it an individual thing, giving a 16 y.o’s senior football? As i see it you could look at clubs in the last 3 years that have played young boys in the first team and seen what has happend or developed u/19s that can stand reserve football.

    thoughts?

    Comment by Borat — January 27, 2007 @ 10:23 pm

  23. Probably should do some research first Lionheart. Several of the state u15 players actually came through eastern region juniors together and started with Clarence in u13’s. They simply have returned to where they started. I think 6 or 7 of them attend the same school, so its no wonder they are playing at the same club.

  26. Thanks SG , whilst Lionheart is a little over the top , their is a fairly strong feeling about this subject. Maybe we can learn from this? , Will FFT put in place a ruling that will stop the current Under 15 coach from taking his squad - to a club next year ? it has happened before! what safeguards are being put in place to stop it happening again??

Isn’t it about time clubs that support player development were rewarded for their efforts!!!

  28. it is fairly clear from previous posts that many people out there expect south hobart to be front runners in the premier league this year. South hobart had a good season last year, and arguably played the best soccer in the league through the midfield thanks to excellent play from people such as bart beecroft. but, as in previous years, there was an obvious brake-down in the front third. Striking revelation Daniel Brown was forced to create many of his own goals. With a potential return of Tom Gordon to the south outfit (fittness an issue), this may change. However, the Knights have only really lost one integral player in John Ladic - granted this is a BIG loss - and i expect the knights to go on and make it three titles in a row. Not always pretty football, but experienced players that get results. shae hickey to step up this year? or maybe corey smith will attempt to plug the whole left by Ladic?

  30. State/Rep squads ending up in one club really isn’t anything new, it’s been happening for years. The current development system does isolate players from their clubs. The question I have, is what are the clubs doing to ensure that these players are still made to feel an important part of the club? From what I have seen the answer is “ZIP”. Have any clubs helped the players in fundraising efforts? Once again I think the answer is “ZIP”. So maybe clubs should stop complaining about squads staying together with their mates, because they only have each other

  39. I congratulate Nathan Pitchford for making it on the mainland, if this is indeed true. But if that is the case then maybe the gap between tasmanian football and Victorian football is closing… nathan is a good keeper but there are probably 4 or 5 other keepers in southern tassie as good if not better than him… What about the leagues number one keeper over the past few years Michael Mos from Clarence, Ben Peter from Knights, Mike Mckenna from Olympic… he has already played mainland football though. Then there is probably the best keeper technically in the league when he isnt injured… Mathew Ferguson…. By the way seasoned player… Ladic is back, shay hickey is only going to have a mild role as he is doing uni up in Launceston.

Im sorry Mr Know Nothing much at all, making it and just signing with a club on the mainland are two different things. If he plays for their first team regularly well done. I think the player you are referring to is actually Olympic player Harry Hages also known as 6yard Harry. According to Harry he was a fantastic player only problem is that noone remembers because it was so long ago.If I am not mistaken, Ken Morton once stated that Harry was one of the most gifted players he ever had the pleasure of coaching. I grant that Nathan is a good goalkeeper and with some decent coaching he coul;d be one of the best in the state. But Nathan needs to work on consistancy in his game. The Southern squad last year had two entertaining goalkeepers, both who can turn defence into attack. Nathan in no way is an entertaining goalkeeper he is an excellent shot stopper but his lack of experience shows in his decision making at times. … and yes I watched Newtown play enough games to see how he played
