Suggestions from the peanut gallery

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 9:52 pm

This blog has been going for close on four months now and has picked up pace over the past 3-4 weeks. I want to continue to give a quality product to the readers (that’s you lot…the peanut gallery!!!  :-D) but I need your help and advise.

I welcome your suggestions on how to improve things be it discussion topics, services to offer, etc.  I would dearly love some idea on how to get some discussion topics going for the most rapidly developing area of the game, that of Women’s Football. Also some of the youngsters that we so often talk about. I would love to have their input, afterall what we are trying to do will impact on their future so it’s only right for them to have a say.

Please keep in mind I work full time. I’m also a father (teenage son & daughter), husband, have a mortgage, etc. So my time is valuable and I don’t really want to be tied to the computer, just want to fine tune things.

I also want to thank people who have offered support and thanks. Your words are most welcome.

Keep the ideas and creating juices flowing folks.

  2. I’d like to see Walter Pless intervene regularly on this blog whether by just posting his reports in here and/or a weekly column.
I am of the opinion that any effort to widen the footbal base in tassie has to involve him and his knowledge. We know Walter as an excellent reporter, I’d like to see him as a commentator and “ambassador” to help raise the profile of the woirld game in tassie.

  3. What do you think about getting rid of the ethnic background of our clubs and have them suburb based, like the Aleague.
I mean South Hbt, North Hbt, Glenorchy, Kingston etc, instead of italians. Greeks, africans, Croatians etc. PLEASE!! bear in mind that i am a migrant myself and the discussion is not about races but about increasing the popularity and the profile of football in tassie.

  4. Has anyone noticed that on ABC TV during the winter months that they weekly televise live local hockey?
I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that this is very popular at all (Word has it that ‘Hymns of the forefathers’ (2.55 fridays) rates higher)
Imagine how good it would be if local Premier League matches were shown, complete with live commentary, on local TV?
My suggestion is that someone pitches this idea to someone who can do something about it, be it FFT or the ABC themselves. Someone other than me.

  5. Even female hockey is shown on abc, without being sexist i would rather watch grass grow than watch girls hockey. I’m sure mens football would rate fairly well on ABCTV.

  6. I know a few people that play hockey and the word is that the main reason the hockey gets televised is because some of the people high up in the ABC are also tied up with hockey.

  7. Great idea, Tassie Soccer on the box.
I’d at the very least like to see a half hour show on Saturday morning or Friday night???, promoting our game, highlighting to the public where the local games are being played that weekend & also some features on some of our talented players accross the state…….
Not sure what sort of backing this would need, buit surely there is time slots the abc need ratings for……. and it’d have to beat watching that boring bloody hockey game.

  8. why don’t FFT play the statewide cup Rd 1 or 2 on the same weekend day as the FA Cup(19th May 2007) it would allow most or nearly all clubs in Tassie to have a club function and have a good get together or raise some revenue if they wish???

  9. We lost out on the opportunity to have “football” on TV when we abandoned the State League .
Shortly after the league was dissolved into Northern and Southern Premier the ABC changed their Saturday afternoon format.
The view of the ABC at the time was that “local” leagues did not command enough profile .

  10. I’ll take it upon myself then. Beware ABC, a letter is imminent…

  11. Shouldn’t FFT be speaking to ABC/Southern Cross/WIN?? Isn’t that the way we promoted the game??

I believe the reintroduction of the State League is still on the table would a TV package be part of that proposal??

  12. Shouldn’t FFT be speaking to ABC/Southern Cross/WIN?? Isn’t that the way we promote the game?? The governing body takes this responsibility.

I believe the reintroduction of the State League is still on the table would a TV package be part of that proposal??

  13. If a State League can’t be supported for Australian Rules (who have a much larger following and access to greater sponsorship dollars) how do we expect to propose one for our own game? The previous incarnation did not survive because a club like Devonport City could not afford to travel every second week to Hobart without compensation. Southern Clubs would complain about having to travel once a year. There is no reason why Southern Premier games couldn’t be shown on ABC TV. The Hockey shown is not a Statewide competition and i dare say it is only shown because someone is on good terms with ABC management. However, beware promoting a game between sides like Metro, Clarence or to a lesser extent Kingborough… I would shudder at the thought of letting people from outside the football fraternity view such a game. Although it may incourage them to play more attractive football so that would be a good thing.

  14. Winston, would tyou like to give the players, committee and the many supporters of Metro, Kingborough and Clarence the benefit of what was swirling around inside your brain when you made the comment about letting people watch those sides play ?

    I’m ready to be enlightened.

  15. Silverstone, if Southern Premier League games were to be televised and the league was attempting to attract more followers, supporters and players to the games I think those teams could do a lot to improve the way they play the game. I don’t doubt their efforts, time or commitment to getting the best result they are capable of, however, lets face it in the last 5 or so seasons I have never witnessed Metro or Clarence play a match I would go out of my way to watch (even though I have :-s). Does that enlighten you? I understand it is hard when at the end of the day coaches just need to get the 3 points however they can or hold on for a draw, but it does produce some ugly football.

    Comment by Winston — March 1, 2007 @ 10:26 am

  16. Winston, I would be interested in knowing what your footballing background is, bearing in mind your comments made on the 28th. Suggesting that a team that finishes in the top 2-3 teams of the league would not be worth watching, in promoting the ‘game’, is ludicrous. Anyone that has watched/played enough football over the years should be smart enough to think otherwise. Anyone with a football brain would and should be envious of what Kingborough stands for and promotes, both on and off the field.

As far as Metro & Clarence are concerned, the standard of play perceived by you may or not be good enough, however the local talent they are promoting will develop sooner rather than later, leaving comments like yours in the ‘dug out’ where they belong.

  17. yeh metro dont play the best soccer but there effort is always 100 percent no matter what line up they have same with clarence, you say 5 years you wouldnt of seen a good metro game well you are wrong for example metro had a great season in 2003 when they made the finals and had many great games for example metro beating knights 6-5 you couldnt have got a better game, and for clarence they have also had some great games where they have beaten top opposition

  18. Winston,

No reading crap doesn’t normally enlighten me at all. For once in my life I don’t know what to say. I’m bloody flabbergasted at reading crud like you’ve just put on here.

Remind me again where Clarence & Kingborough finished last year. I’m surprised you didn’t throw South Hobart into the mix, after all the rest of the suburban clubs made the list. Strange that !

    Comment by silverstone — March 1, 2007 @ 2:05 pm

  19. Last time I checked Clarence was a City and Kingborough a Municipality… but what would I know?

South Hobart generally play good exciting free flowing football, I would go watch a Knights V South game any day.

I’ve not said anything about results but if you want people to come and sit through 90 minutes… kick and run will insure they don’t come back.

Kingborough have done very well over the past few seasons and have a few very good players. I hear they are a bit underdone so far this year.

  20. Winston & Silverstone…I think we’ll wind-up this conversation now that it has descended into personal insult. Nothing constructive will come from it. It’s good to see some passion though!! Thank you.

  21. peanut gallery indeed…. lol :-) If you seen a game like lions Vs knights it’s be good to watch on t.v. or even the spectical of knights thumping taroona like hobart utd last year would be better than boring old hockey…THAT’S for sure!

  22. Womens hockey can be alright. :) Any game shown on tv is a plus. Do people really care if the AFL grand final is a shocker, take the final a couple years ago between the pies and lions, no one gave the pies a chance, but it rained they played well and the game was close.
