  1. Kiwi’s are into the A-League after Townsville pulled the pin on their bid.

  2. After the success of the A- league, does anyone think the same idea could be applied to the local FOOTBALL scene? Six maybe Seven teams in the premier league, maybe district names ie, Glenorchy, New Town, Kingbrough, Hobart etc, etc.Instead of FFT asking for 420 + players in the top flight leagues as the leagues are at the moment they could be asking for 340 / 350 players in the top flight. this would make the div 1 / 2 leagues stronger, cause the extra players that don’t play seniors/ magoo’s under 21’s, would be playing in the div 1 / 2 leagues. I think if you are not playing magoo’s or seniors by the age of 18, there is a fair chance that there is a reason why. Silly idea i know , so i’ll shudup now, cubye.

  3. Isn’t that was FFT suggested several months ago - but to the extreme - only six teams statewide - and instead of replacing the SPL/NPL, it was in addition to it?

  4. Just for a post for Corey, I asked if you were the most hated player on the pitches. I don’t hate you, but you seem to be targetted by opposing teams. Butchered or snapped and the referees don’t seem to mind. You’re a funny blok,e a good personality! Trust me I am not a Knights hater at all… I have been a supporter of the Knights for a long time!

Now it seems as if i’m sucking up to Corey Smith… ahh no

  5. Just back onto the topic after letting Smithers know that my comment meant no harm.

I don’t think it would work. Fair enough the FFA introduced an A-league based on regions not ethnicity but does anyone really believe it could work at our level? The A-league is a commercial business, whereas our local clubs aren’t. They are heavily back by previous players and supporters and are heavily financed by the local ethnic communities they represent. By taking this links away you would be ultimately taking 50+ years of development away. I doubt the traditionalists will even consider this. I know football in australia is trying to go down the road of non ethnic clubs but really that is what the game is built upon and in Hobart there arent too many ethnically fuelled tensions really. If there are tensions between a club its usually a history or traditional rivalries.

  6. Walter Pless has put up all the match reports for the last two weekends (SPL & Div.1). He has also included an ‘Opinion Piece’ that was cut to shreds by the Mercury. Lots of reading…any feedback/comments can be entered in here.

    Comment by Blackjack — March 20, 2007 @ 12:49 am

  7. Does anyone still doubt the complete disregard The Mercury has for our game?? Have a look at todays paper - an article from a month ago!!! Walter has confirmed that he submitted a current article.

Time FFT took the paper to task properly and demanded a fair go!

Perhaps an approach to The Examiner to run southern based articles on our game. Then see if The Mercury loses any circulation - it seems that would be the only way they are likely to change their attitude.

    Comment by Steve Pitchford — March 20, 2007 @ 9:26 am

  8. About the “ethnic clubs” - in the NSL this was an issue because of the violence that ensued. You don’t generally hear of reports of that kind of thing here. Names have been changed (Glenorchy Croatia - Glenorchy Knights, etc), and although there might be other symbolic links, such as patterns on club logos, etc. there aren’t really brawls between different ethnic backgrounds at games.

Another example - Queensland Roar was formed from Brisbane Lions (not the AFL club) who before that were Brisbane Hollandia - obviously a Dutch club, and their colour (orange) still shows this. But they never had brawls at their game, so the FFA allowed what boils down to a simple name change.

The aim is to make the game open to people who like football but feel excluded by not being a member of the local Italian club or Greek club or Croatian club. It is ironic that (I presume) those clubs were originally formed because migrants felt excluded by everyone else…

    Comment by Chuq — March 20, 2007 @ 10:00 am

  9. the examiner has less time for soccer than the mercury. not that the full reports get in the paper but at least u guys have a proper reporter we have an old ex president from lonnie who has two descriptions for goals. the player scored from a loose ball inside the box or the player pounced after a goalkeeping error. if the goal is scored with a header or outside the box he leaves it out cause he wouldnt know what to say. the rest of the reports are basically the same citys experience won thru, rangers inconsistency in front of goal, lonnies dogged determination in defence etc

he has the same report on his computer i think and then just has to change the teams playing each other and new scores

  10. I tend to agree in principal with “the Big Yin” that having a state league based on the A-League would be marvelous but unlikely to work. the proposal was for completely new clubs based on geography (Hobart, Kingston, Bellerieve etc). it was to be 3 southern clubs, 2 launceston clubs and 1 NW club. it would certainly raise the standard of football here in tas and create a buzz around a new league with potential new sponsorships and coverage. however commercially it is not viable. why would a NW club bother travelling to the south and Launceston every 2nd week if they had to pay from their own pocket???
Also wiping the history of a club like South (97 years) and Knights (50 years) would be a shame.

if only Paul Lennon could spare a little change from the 213million spent on Elwick Racecourse.

    Comment by JohnSmith — March 20, 2007 @ 1:40 pm

  11. Well for the NW club it wouldn’t be too bad - Devonport to Launceston is only an hour.

Maybe two NW, two North and four South clubs would be fairer?

    Comment by Chuq — March 20, 2007 @ 5:06 pm

  12. By the way I tend to call the proposed six-club league the T-League for the want of a better word!

    Comment by Chuq — March 20, 2007 @ 5:06 pm

  13. The “T-League” could end up like football in the 60s and 70s where two leagues formed a ’skips’ league and an ‘ethnic’ league. We know what prevailed then and where the money was, it lay with the ethnic clubs.

But the idea is good the more I think of it the better it gets… on paper. But not feasible unfortunately. The return of a Statewide league would be good. Also probably not doable in the foreseeable future as the quality of many northern teams and a few southern teams wouldnt make it worth the travelling i should imagine.

    Comment by 1878 — March 21, 2007 @ 1:22 am

  14. Just a reminder 1878… Somerset were State Champions last year and they showed they were good enough to compete with Knights (I actually thought they played considerably better than Knights that day) and in very recent years both Devonport and Launceston City have won state titles (cups and playoff with south champion).

    Comment by Winston — March 21, 2007 @ 11:45 am

  15. I don’t think the “T-League” intends to replace the existing northern and southern winter competitions - I think it is intended as a more “elite” level league to be played over summer, parallel to the A-League season - so it could replace the summer cup.

Then again, it has been 6 months since the initial news article and haven’t heard anything from FFT since.

    Comment by Chuq — March 21, 2007 @ 12:51 pm

  16. how many are expected to attend the senior Summer Cup final? Does it draw a bigger crowd than usual season games? wat are ticket prices?

    Comment by Comment — March 21, 2007 @ 3:05 pm

  17. Winston, I tend to disagree with you on the standard of football in the north. Traditionally the Cities have been competitive but I don’t think Somerset is helping your argument. Yes, they played well I will not take that away from them. But it was also easy to think they played better through a quite frankly crap Knights performance. I would’ve liked to have seen Somerset be pitched against South Hobart at the same point. South Hobart were in fine form towards the end of last season. I think you could probably split it into sections. You have great teams such as knights and south hobart, then good teams, such as clarence, the cities and somerset but there is nothing really between these good teams and standard teams. Whereas in the South there’s Zebras and Eagles bridging that gap. Well thats what it seemed like last season.

    Comment by 1878 — March 21, 2007 @ 11:15 pm

  18. 1878 the only difference between the two leagues is the southern league has more depth with closer games between the top sides and the bottom sides where as up here u can get some lopsided scorelines with some teams such as lonnie ulvie. the top sides up north are more than capable of beating top south teams. ie somerset beating knights, in the cup lonnie city went past knights and south hobart before losing to uni in the final. this year dev will also come right back up with the best teams in the state when snowy mckenna and collins if they can stay on the park

Now there’s a difficult choice…New Town Eagles v Zebras…oh, I hate having to make these decisions. I’ve got Austar, what do you think??

With that decision I have probably tainted my reputation forever!!! :-D

  24. Blackjack, you can tape the Aussie v China and still go to the final

    Comment by Boots — March 23, 2007 @ 5:26 pm

  25. Maybe SJ you could ask your mates at FFT to chat to Austar as a possible sponsor then we could watch both ??
Know that will never happen , lucky game kicks off around 10.00 should be in veiwing area by then , no way will it go to pens , in fact with around 50 min between women’s game and prem final hope FFT have some entertainment !!!

oncesacked coach…I’ve been asked to sing the national anthem but I’ve requested a bag to wear over my head so my identity won’t be revealed. I believe the referees will also form chorus line of high kicks. Should be an entertaining night. HAHAHA :-D

    Comment by sj — March 23, 2007 @ 10:54 pm

  29. Congratulations and best of luck to both teams tonight , i think it is great to see sparky again getting his team ( no superstars just hard working - well organised players ) into another final . Nick has stuck to his team plan another team who are well organised but rely heavy on the likes of Manella and Pullen , Zebras seem a diffeent outfit to last season , obvious change of coach has got the players playing with a smile on their face and enjoying the game again , less structured more attacking.
Hope it is a good game .

  30. Today, an understrength Nelson missing their goal keeper and playing 4 div 1 reserves beat Metro’s Premier League reserves 4-1.

    Comment by chalky — March 24, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

  31. chalky, well done to Nelson considering they were missing all those players….. they had a couple good players out there.
I was quite happy to see all our u/19’s get a good run, considering most reserves were unavailable for the afternoon, but don’t let the facts ruin a good story.

    Comment by Chaffey — March 24, 2007 @ 7:42 pm

  32. Oh and just for the record, i don’t play for nelson ;)
Yeah noticed you guys had a few young blokes out there, the keeper looks like he could be a good project for you blokes, he was good to watch.

    Comment by chalky — March 25, 2007 @ 5:05 pm

  33. Yes, chalky the “KEEPER” is Mykel Porter.
Very happy with his performance on Saturday. The experience against the elder more phyical guys can only benifit his progress.
We let him down a couple of times early in the game & conceded two penalties, Both of which he almost saved.
To his credit he kept his head high, and produced some fine saves as the game went on.

    Comment by Chaffey — March 26, 2007 @ 10:30 am

  34. Chalky, for someone who doesnt play for nelson, you sure have been known to talk them up!! The mens team to the best of my knowledge have never won any thing, are coming off a 4 win 06 season and a 1 win 07 summer cup, and that was over a grossly undermanned DOSA.
Im sure the win over Metro was a good lead in to their season, but they will be brought back to earth this weekened by the mighty beachside. Carn the ’side!!

Good to see you Harold. I like your e-mail address :-)

  35. oooo such fighting words laid out on the table… Over division 1. Perhaps Harold could give Chalky’s ball back and let there be peace in the playground ;) So beachside would be paying 1.30 for the win, nelson 2.45?

    Comment by Blackjack — March 27, 2007 @ 9:57 am

  38. Why wouldnt I use fighting words over Div 1 1878, not that they were serious words, but all the same. Div 1 is a league that can keep the SPL interesting with the promotion and relegation of clubs, and the Div 1’s involvement in the Lakoseljac cup can produce the odd cinderella story. Do you forget that only a few years ago Clarence (Phoenix) were a div 1 club, and now they can match it with any SPL side. Clarence is is so big they have a former SPL zebras coach running their juniors. So why wouldnt the 100 or so players in div 1, who train twice a week and play competive football every weekend, not take it seriously. I think they have as much right as any one to get involved in passionate discussions about their clubs, some of which have more passion about the game than some SPL sides.

And Beachsides loss to South saturday was just a mere bump in the road to the title this year. Beachside did run with 9 under 17’s, the experience of them playing in a cup final is priceless…win or lose.

    Comment by Harold — March 27, 2007 @ 10:46 pm

  39. Hey Blackjack what are the odds on who will be the first coach to be relieved of his duties this year ??
Who will be the first SPL player red carded this year ?

  44. I was one of those fools who got up this morning to watch the Andorra - England game on SBS , yes i have slapped myself around the head a couple of times for punishment - but no austar - have to take what one can get.

International football played this way is doing nobody any favours

Andorra were very happy to defend deep — 5 across 18 yard line - ( those 5 never went beyond 40 metres from goal line. 4 midfielders - three who sat in front of back 5 and i think only one of those went over halfway all game - a midfielder whose job it was to try and support lone striker , but as soon as ball lost he had to play as a defensive midfielder . pretty attacking .lol

Given the fact that a 2-0 loss was considered a moral victory - time wasting the norm

England for all their posession tried to play Premier League football , to many balls played into poor areas , long passes into crowded areas , players running at players in wrong areas - little interplay between players - to much a t pace - little one touch - two touch play.

It was aweful , but then i tried to think what COULD have done as a coach ??

What would you have done ?

It was aweful , but then i tried to think what i would have done as a coach ??

  46. Pick a team from the Championship League led by Steven Gerrard. At least they’ll play for you.

As it is, England have too many egos, besides that, the clubs don’t ‘encourage’ players to want to play for the national team any more. Club football is far more important according to the clubs. Even the fans don’t have too much love for the national team any longer. Ask a Man U, Chelsea or Liverpool fan which they’d prefer; a premiership or a world cup and the answer is immediate and without hesitation. A premiership is far more desireable.

    Welcome to Global Football.
