  3. Public Alert: women and children (and small animals) are asked to keep a wide berth of the Myer shop windows this coming Saturday and Sunday in the event of an anticipated ‘total eclipse’ of the ‘moon’ :-D

    Comment by Blackjack — March 21, 2007 @ 10:09 pm

  4. Blackjack im guessing the eclipse wont be this weekend as the State Cup and League Champs will not have been decided…

  5. Big Yin,

be very careful. It wasn’t that long ago that a contest you were involved in almost resulted in a similar thing happening.

I wouldn’t have thought we are quite ready for a full moon yet.

  6. What do people think about the female fifa referees coming down to ref our Men’s premier Res and Premier games?

I don’t like the idea, it takes games away from the local refs.

    Comment by Keeper — March 22, 2007 @ 7:44 am

  7. anything that is taken away from the local refs can only be a good thing…

    Comment by CONVERT — March 22, 2007 @ 8:36 am

  8. I understand the idea is to promote participation by females in refereeing. The two female assistants in the Premier final are local referees who already officiate in Premier & Reserves matches. Its not a bad idea to have new faces refereeing rather than same refs week in week out.

    Comment by sj — March 22, 2007 @ 8:44 am

  9. SJ,

I can only assume the arrangement will be reciprocal then ?

    Comment by Silverstone — March 22, 2007 @ 9:05 am

  10. The more new faces refereeing, the better.
Gives you a clean slate as well, I know certain referee’s don’t like me. I’m sure some of you have similar issues ;)

    Comment by Comment — March 22, 2007 @ 1:32 pm

  12. reciprocal? in waht way?

    Comment by sj — March 22, 2007 @ 1:50 pm

  13. I dont care who ref’s the matches as long as they understand the off-side rule. It seems the lines persons here have a major issue in getting them right. Anyway the girls are better to look at.

    Comment by Boots — March 22, 2007 @ 2:04 pm

  14. Probably wrong time to bring this up but a question to all who read. Do any clubs or soccer tasmania keep records in relation to the number of games played, goals scored etc for players?
I constantly get asked by people in Aussie Rules cirlces this question, most of them tell me how respective clubs have 100 game etc awards. Would be a nice thing if it was about, anybody got any ideas?

  16. the refs you send up to lonnie go alright compared to the ones they have up here. what do some of the metro people think seeing you see both types.

    Comment by billy — March 23, 2007 @ 12:08 am

  17. SJ,

what I mean is, if we are having female referees coming down here, nah, it doesn’t matter.

  18. Brett

I know that SOmerset do it and have a big honour board up there with all the games played, not sure about goals though. There would be a few around with a lot of games under thier belts.

    Comment by charlie white — March 23, 2007 @ 8:09 am

  19. I’ll qualify my response by saying I’ve never played the game, however my perception of the referees we have had in the Hudson Cup is that they have been pretty good.

One thing that I like that seems to be the norm in the north is that the referees allow the game be more physical and to let it flow a lot more. I appreciate watching the football played like that, but, others may not.

    Comment by Greg Saunders — March 23, 2007 @ 8:15 am

  20. Greg I agree with you on the more physical play, it does make the game flow more. I was in Melbourne to watch a game were that was the case “fast and physical”. You could also call the ref a clown and get away with it without a card. We seem to have inconsistent refereeing here, and most of all a lack of understanding of the off-side rule.

    Comment by Boots — March 23, 2007 @ 10:20 am

  21. Couldn’t agree more Boots with your comments re the offside rule , however just as big a problem is the lack of understanding is by the players themselves !!
FIFA have made it very difficult with passive and interferring with play interpretations and as shown at top level with full time refs and assistant the inconcistancies still occur.
Mind you this has been going on for more years than you and I have been around .
Having watched football and coached interstate i have to agree a number of local refs give frees like netball ( exceptions are around espec Pete Angel who likes to ref like he played ) refereeing ( sorry if i have offended netball refs ) any contact give a free .
The bigger problem for me are the ones who want to be the main attraction ( yes we all know who they are) but must admit think the younger ones are improving and will get better with experience.
Hope new mainland appointed ref coach will change the soft refs.

  25. sj…with the referee coach from a zero tolerance state like qld, does that mean we’re f***ed?? :-D

    Comment by Blackjack — March 24, 2007 @ 6:40 am

  26. Having watched QLD premier league last year whilst working for a month in Brisbane - SJ their is no zero tolerance in that league , it is refereed as should all premier league’s , referees concentrating on keeping the game going , allowing contact hard non over the top tackles - physical yes with hargie bargie , plenty of chat - abuse to refs disciplined but also allowing players to have a say , yes swearing in frustration but common sense ruling by refs .
Time will tell -but i hope the new coach finally stops the boys club that has developed in our refs branch and the allienation of refs the players enjoy playing under and coaches want to see out their stops !

    Comment by oncesacked coach — March 24, 2007 @ 8:45 am

  27. mmm - you may well be!!! - apparently he is very well credentialled and highly regarded - hopefully FFT will release more detailed information.

    Comment by sj — March 24, 2007 @ 9:24 am

  28. Does anyone condone swearing on the park that is audible to especially kids ? No. I imagine not. What is frustrating is the inconsistency of the interpretation.

I believe my son a few years back was the 1st person to be sent of a under the zero tolerance policy. Game was at South Hobart, he was on the far side of the ground when he was given the red card and none of the specators that were there had any idea why he was given a card until he told us.

Some time later, am sitting in seating area behind coaches box at KGV wth Rod Sanders (father of Matty), when we both hear a player on the far side of the ground drop the magic word. What happens ? Nothing!! The thing that gets me is that this “rule” unlike physical contact etc does not even require interpretatiion as far as I see it. You either said it and as we were told by the umpires coach at a meeting prior to it being introduced it was audible to spectators or it wasn’t.

I don’t think any players would condone dropping the 2 words that we dont want kids especially to hear, its the inconsistent interpretation which, shouldn’t be that hard to fix.

It also makes a bloody mockery of the whole situation when any weeked when watching the A league they have a different tolerance policy.

    Comment by greg saunders — March 24, 2007 @ 10:26 am

  29. We’ve been through this discussion before Greg and my beef is with using the ‘F’ word itself. As someone pointed out previously, our kids’ music, movies, newspapers, even tv broadcasts are full of the ‘F’ word these days. To walk on the park and be expected to just ‘turn it off’ is asking to much.

As an adult (playing adult football), if I walked up to a referee or an opponent and said, “Your a f***ing clown”, that is abusive and the player deserves to be dismissed from the field of play but if I muff a sitter and respond with a, “Oh f***”!! It’s not directed at anyone and it NO WORSE that what we hear and see on TV, then I shouldn’t face santions for behaviour that if ‘tolerated’ (not condoned or encouraged) in everyday life.

And don’t give me that BS story (SJ and Co.) that it has been brought in to attract families to the football. I would reliably guess that the zero tolerance on swearing hasn’t attracted one person to the game.

It’s just FFT and Co. attempting to wield a big stick. It’s especially laughable when you see cricketers, footballers (of all codes) and any other sport you like to mention, yes even netball, using language with apparent abandon. If you’re going to ban the use of such language, make it consistent and across all codes of sport. Otherwise it’s just another object of derision that can be aimed at us.

    Comment by Blackjack — March 24, 2007 @ 11:13 am

  30. Oncesacked coach well said. It looks like the refs want to control the passion of the game apart from being the disciplinarian. The fine line on a card is always questioned by the receiving team regardless of studs-up or swearing out of frustration, however its the refs job to be consistent in his decision making process across the board. The mood of the game and players performances are controled by the refs as far as momentum goes, so if there is new blood and direction coming into Tassie all the better for our game.

    Comment by Boots — March 24, 2007 @ 12:52 pm

  31. I thought the refereeing in the clarence v south game was quite ordinary. For a ref that is challenging for fifa selection…poor.

she missed 2 or 3 yellow card opportunities, and when pushing and shoving broke out, she had no control.

Not trying to put her down, but if local referees, especially the men, missed out today because of the females, well, it’s not good enough.

    Comment by Keeper — March 24, 2007 @ 6:52 pm

  32. I agree Keeper, local ref’s could’ve handled that match better (and that’s saying something..), it was almost as if she favoured South in the decisions/card dishing, which is hard to believe when she shouldn’t have any leniency towards either side…. Not saying any ref should, but I’m sure they do have differing opinions of various clubs/players that may impact on them a bit (human afterall), where as she should’ve had none.

Also, I know they’re trying to expose the Women’s game a bit more, but putting the Women’s Premier game between the Reserves and Prem League final was a crowd-killer. The standard of the game was very poor, that wouldn’t make any use of the exposure they were vien.

    Comment by Ril — March 24, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

  33. I agree with you too Ril…the women’s premier game was very poor standard. I watched the prem res and 5 mins of the women’s, then just left. not really good enough to watch.
I do think that South deserved 2 or 3 yellows…and then some.

    Comment by Keeper — March 24, 2007 @ 9:24 pm

  34. Keeper & Ril - reserves very tame match - nothing at all in it - handbags at ten paces - here we are saying let the boys play - then when they do you want yellow cards. “she missed 2 or 3 yellow card opportunities” - hello?? contrary to popular opinion referees do not look for yellow card opportunities!!

    Comment by Steve Pitchford — March 24, 2007 @ 11:30 pm

  35. Maybe Keeper is a closet referee ?????

    Comment by ikentina — March 25, 2007 @ 9:48 am

  36. I agree with letting the boys play, although I’m not sure how well they play when being dragged down to the ground or tackled late (from memory they were 2 of the more obvious things).

Personally I’d love to see the game played/reffed with that mindset, but 9/10 refs don’t allow it, so when it’s allowed like it was yesterday, the players would be disappointed in the lack of consistency between them. Again though, her own consistency in the one match changed I think.

    Comment by Ril — March 25, 2007 @ 4:31 pm

  37. not a closet referee i’m sure…sorry to disappoint.

    Comment by Keeper — March 25, 2007 @ 5:40 pm

  38. Letting the boys play, exactly! why was our match as soft as butter, it stated we had 9 U/16 year olds but doesnt mean the ref should of played it like a under 16 match. i thought the reffereing was poor for both teams.

    Comment by Szoka — March 25, 2007 @ 6:49 pm

  39. Szoka — I take it you are talking about the div One final?

    Comment by Steve Pitchford — March 26, 2007 @ 12:08 am

  40. I personally thought the standard of the reserves game was of a higher level than the Div 1 game. I notice there has been a little bit of discussion on here of late comparing the standard of the two leagues, the Clarence and South Hobart Reserves teams would have comfortably beaten the two Div 1 finalists. The reserves game was tame in terms of the argy bargy I agree with Steve, it certainly was the match of the day with some cracking goals by Alex Gordon and Jon Darby. Bring on the start of the Season

  47. comment,
The Zebras did well i will give you that but think about it, its summer cup its not that big really as most the clubs are trying new things out and not playing with full strenght squads… The real stuff starts tonight and these are the games that really count. Wait till you get into the season before even thinking about the treble… I think the zebras will not have a chance over south hobart in round 3 or kingbourgh and glenorcy in rounds 7 and 8 as they will make up the top 3 again
