Classic Blogging
Jesse Fink (shame about the name) writes a blog for Fox Sport on Australian sport and he submitted this ABSOLUTE CLASSIC piece. Top marks and gets my vote for blogger of the year.
I urge you to have a read and would be equally as interested to hear your feedback. Enjoy
STOP PRESS: Have a look at Jesse’s latest installment aptly entitled;
Get set for Version 3 of the Hyundai Has-Been League
I just love this guys outlook on how the game should be played in this country. It’s also a very good grounding exercise. If this happens at the sharp end of the game on the big island, then are we expecting too much of the game in this little island.
Hell no, you’ve got to aspire to something!!!
Must be my sense of humour. Jeez!!!

I thought this was a top quailty post and the beginnings of an interesting discussion point but it has attracted NO input whatsoever. Yet you put up a forum topic on gossip and inuendo and I get over 200 posts.
So I have to ask the question, “Are you interested in football or the latest version of football’s answer to Woman’s Weekly or TV Soap”?
I have to say I’m a bit disappointed.

Well Blackjack I read the article and I really enjoyed it and thought that it summed up the Australian ideals that big is best and bigger is even better. There are millions of better players out there not playing than who are playing in the lesser leagues. Australian teams should be out there discovering these players and then on selling them for profit if nothing else, anyone who can play a bit will get snapped up by a richer euro team anyway. Asia and South America are where Aust Football should be focusing on if they are convinced they need imported players, get me a young player than a has-been in Romario any day of the week. I prefer to see development than decline, especially in those that were once superstars…

Not fretting…more a case of dispairing. Makes me wonder just what makes people tick. You continue mulling corner flag and before you know it you’ll be a nice little drop of wine and then everyone will be happy…
Glad you enjoyed it Charlie

A very true outlook on the whole shebang. Give me an average Aussie over a has-been Pom any day.
Blackjack, don’t ‘despair’ :-). I read it soon after the post came out but really didn’t have that much to say.

Fair enough I suppose…I’ll shut up then.
Or is the point of this site meant to be to put forward opinions?

Most of the points made in those two articles are fair enough, but then many of the A-League clubs have already caught on (Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets in particular), while others do seem to be slow learners.
To be fair to Branko Culina, he’s been in the Sydney job (temporarily) for five minutes and his team aren’t playing competitive games every week because the A-League is out of season, whereas most of the other ACL teams are in the middle of their seasons.
It should also be pointed out that many of the Asian and South American imports have been flops - only Fred out of Melbourne’s three Brazilians was an unqualified success, and he has now left the club after only one season. How much time, money and effort went into scouting and recruiting these players? You need to consider more than just Fred’s salary when evaluating the success of this approach.
And if this guys is going to point the finger at clubs signing ageing has-beens as marquee players for their marketing value, he should also look at his employer Fox Sports’ role in hyping these guys. Andy Harper, Robbie Slater and the rest of the crew nearly wet themselves every time Romario played even though it was embarrasingly obvious he was well passed his best.

I do like a drop of fine wine, but getting back to the post, I am all for our ALeague sides looking at young unknown talent especially if they are looking at our own.
