Australia v Uruguay
The Socceroos squad to take on arch rivals Uruguay has been announced with a few new faces maybe surprising some of the pundits. Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, John Aloisi, Mark Bresciano and Vince Grella headline the list of players unavailable.
Australia will play Uruguay on 2nd June at the Telstra Stadium, Sydney, the same ground at which we saw victory and Australia advance to the 2006 World Cup.
Who would you have NOT selected and who would replace them?
The squad is:
Daniel Allsopp (Melbourne Victory, Australia), Michael Beauchamp (Nuremberg, Germany), Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets, Australia), Nick Carle (Newcastle Jets, Australia), David Carney (Sydney FC, Australia), Simon Colosimo (Sivasspor, Turkey), Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven, Netherlands), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers, England), Adam Federici (Reading, England), Ryan Griffiths (Liaoning, China), Brett Holman (NEC Nijmegen, Holland), Brad Jones (Middlesbrough, England), Patrick Kisnorbo (Leicester City, England), Scott McDonald (Motherwell, Scotland), Lucas Neill (West Ham, England), Jade North (Newcastle Jets, Australia), Matthew Spiranovic (Nuremberg, Germany), Shane Stefanutto (Lillestrom, Norway), Mile Sterjovski (Basel, Switzerland), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory, Australia), Michael Thwaite (Wisla Krakow, Poland), Carl Valeri (Grosseto, Italy), Luke Wilkshire (FC Twente, Netherlands).
Matt Spiranovic for Michael Beauchamp
BJ
Matt Spiranovic is already IN the squad as is Beauchamp…

Not a bad squad considering the amount of regulars missing, good to see players like carney and carle getting a run for the national team. oh and Scott Mcdonald is now at Park head;)

It is good to see seven A League players being selected (if one includes Colosimo). I would have thought Llubo Milicivic, Adrian Leijer, Mark Milligan, Kevin Muscat and Ante Covic would be disappointed at their non-selection. I am pleased Colosimo has been selected. He has been a good player, but has suffered bad luck with injuries.

Muscat is probably too old to be selected at this stage and Covic is badly out of form according to TWG reports. Milligan is playing for the Olyroos. It’s great to see some young keepers get a call up so at least we have some depth for when Schwarzer retires

Not too bad a squad really considering. Apart from the obvious… I would like to see Patafta perhaps being given a run. A young bloke with a lot of potential. I’d like to see what Scott MacDonald has to offer and I will be pretty disappointed if Thompson and Allsop start before him. Federici has had a good season…. I think we have had worse, but this side will be competitive I believe.

So the starting keeper would be? Jones or Federici? Don’t know much abaout Federici except he had the game of his life in the FA Cup against Man United I think? Do we think this position is in good hands (sorry pardon my pun)? From what I have seen from the Championship and the Premier League Jones really isn’t an International keeper? Maybe there is a keeper I missed in this list but I do not think either are ready? But I suppose a pointless friendly is the best place to try them. Would like to see Federici play!

Australia is in need of some keepers more so than any other area. Gone are the days when you had the likes of Schwarzer, Filan and Bosnich. Arnie should be working on the younger keepers giving them a crack… not like throwing Michael Petkovic against Denmark. The guy was virtually booed off at half time. Federici would be my choice to start

Danny Vukovic is a great young Aussie keeper and probably deserved a spot in this squad based on his form with Central Coast Mariners last season, when he won their player of the year award.

I think Danny Vukovic is a keeper with alot of promise, he will play for Australia consistently one day I am sure. There are a few other keepers in the A-League that show good promise. Liam Reddy is brilliant on his day, but shows lack of discipline. Clint Bolton is consistent and may also end up as a long term Australian keeper. If a keeper like Brad Jones can show better concentration he will be a good relacement until the likes of Federici, Vukovic, and Reddy mature into reliable, consistent international match winners. Jones is a taller keeper so better slots in to Schwarzer’s position, whereas Vukovic is a shorter keeper but moves really well. I think choosing Federici in the squad was a good move and shows young keepers there is now a chance to play for Australia once Schwarzer and Kalac leave international football. It will make them more competitive which will lift the standard of Aussie keepers, I hope!
