Yeah, forget to add that one Ril…fixed now though. And it’s kick off 2.00pm not 2.30. :-) BJ

  3. Great round of games coming up, will teams be at full strength or will they concentrate on their respective leagues and rest their sore and older players.. What importance does each club place on the Laka Cup? If anybody knew him or his family this cup deserves the Tasmanian prestige of The FA Cup. Time will tell — Go Juv……

  7. I was speaking to one of the youngsters from Kingborogh Lions and he tells me Lions are taking a ‘reserves’ squad to Burnie, mostly the young players but minus the likes of Sanita and Machioli.

  8. Mirror Image - Sort of correct, we are not taking this aquad by choice, Chell is away this week and Sanita is unavailable, Warren is also going to have a breather and Gio is going to get a start so a little younger, we definately have some of our younger guys on the bench who will get a run as well.

  14. But why Clarence and Nelson? Why not NTE and Nelson…I presume Clarence were drawn to play Riverside?

    Comment by redandblack — May 26, 2007 @ 9:34 am

  15. Whilst Riverside were thought to be entering a team there was only one team to have a bye so they seeded the top team in the state from last season to get that bye. Once Riverside were not dfielding a team Clarence also got a bye. Similar ’seeding’ is used in mens draw - only there are more teams so it applies to get the right number of teams into the round of 16.

  16. Uni 1 goal 6 behinds South Hobart 2 goals 22 behinds,

An entertaining game guaranteed to give supporters palpitations .
Both sides gave their all ,South shaded Uni in extra time and kept playing attacking soccer whist the longer the game the more defensive Uni.

Cooper headed home from a set peice corner .

Lo along the ground to an unmarked Hill at the top of the Box . Hill threaded it through a packed Box at just over head height to Cooper who stole around the back of the Uni defence to head home from inside the 6 yard box . At the 117th minute .
    A good poacher’s goal.

  29. Metro beat DOSA 8-0 today in a friendly (as neither was involved in the Cup). DOSA had to borrow a goalkeeper from Metro (one half each by Biggar and Land).

It was wonderful at KGV to see new teams and new faces in action (Devonport and Prospect Knights). That’s what we’re missing out on in the absence of a State League. WIN TV were there because it was a State-wide competition.

    Comment by Walter Pless — May 26, 2007 @ 8:47 pm

  30. Four southern and three northern sides are through to the next round of the Milan Lakoseljac Memorial Trophy State-wide football competition after yesterday’s first-round proper.

The victor in Sunday’s remaining cup-tie, between Nelson Eastern Suburbs and Clarence United, will make it five southern sides through.

Holders University were knocked out by fellow southern Premier League outfit South Hobart, who won 2-1 after extra-time away at Olinda Grove.

David Cooper netted both goals for South Hobart, while John Merry was University’s marksman.

Glenorchy Knights, Hobart Zebras and Taroona are the other southern sides through, while Launceston City, Burnie United and Somerset qualified for the next round from the north of the State.

Three goals by Tom Huigsloot gave Glenorchy Knights a 3-0 win over Prospect Knights at KGV Park, but the Launceston outfit acquitted itself well, with Alan Eadie posing a constant threat to the southerners.

With Glenorchy leading 2-0, only a brilliant save by Ben Peter prevented Eadie from putting the northerners back into the game.

Devonport City, without captain and key defender John ‘Snow’ Compagne and with out-field player Andrew Howe in goal, should have beaten a lacklustre Hobart Zebras at KGV Park, but three crucial saves by Zebras goalkeeper Frank Mainella denied the North-West Coast side and ultimately allowed Zebras to win 3-1 after extra-time.

Mainella denied Peter Gilham twice and Chris McKenna once in one-on-one situations, while McKenna and Gilham also saw shots come back off the Zebras crossbar.

Howe also had a good game in goal for Devonport. He made several important saves, including ones against Dylan Fennell and Ricky Self.

Daniel Lapolla put Zebras ahead in the 62nd minute, but Simon Wilson headed Devonport level two minutes later.

Zebras finally gained the ascendancy in the second period of extra-time over a tiring Devonport and goals by Mark Falzon and Aaron Brazendale gave the southerners their passage to the next round.

Zebras were missing midfielder Brett Pullen and defender Michael Connolly.

Kingborough Lions United led home-side Burnie United 2-0 through goals by Michael Giomataris, but the Coastal side fought back to win 3-2.

State premiers Somerset beat New Town Eagles 2-0 away at Clare Street through goals by Toby Skein and Bobby Eaves.

This set a new club record for Eagles of 10 consecutive losses, beating their previous worst run in 1970 of nine straight defeats.

Taroona caused a major upset by downing another southern Premier League side, Hobart Olympic, 1-0 at home at Kelvedon Park through an 18th-minute goal by Jonathon Mathers.

Launceston City overcame Northern Rangers 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out after the sides were level at 1-1 after extra-time.

A penalty by Alex Brownlie gave City the lead, but Simon Petrusma’s equaliser took the game into extra-time and eventually a penalty shoot-out.

Brownlie, Justin Dyer and Roger Mies netted penalties for City, while only Derek Schipper was successful for Rangers.

[Unable to contact anyone from Burnie United for their scorers. Come on guys! Lift your game and let the media know. Your players deserve recognition.]

  32. Hi Walter,
Did you try phoning the club??
If you phoned Burnie United Football Club we would have been happy to give you our scorers.
    Scip Luttmer 1
    O.G.
    Ben Croswell

We gifted Lions 2 goals in first ten mins, one a very soft penalty, then a defensive blunder.
From then on Burnie gradually gained ascendency, eventually putting Lions away.
Both sides well below full strength.
    Refereeing terrible, inconsistant beyond belief

Hugo, going on your suggestions Walter would be required to make many phone calls during the weekend to obtain ALL results. Each club on the other hand would only need to make ONE phone call. Now I’m no rocket scientist but which would seem more logical to you, especially as you would be eager to promote your players and club by ensuring your victory was well publicised?? BJ

  34. Hi Hugo

Didn’t have any numbers. I tried your club’s website but could only find names but no numbers.

I contacted Launceston City, Northern Rangers and Somerset, but could find no contact numbers for Burnie. Besides, with the Glenorchy Knights v Prospect Knights game starting late because of extra-time in the Tilford Zebras v Devonport City game, I was racing against the newspaper’s deadline and had to get the story in.

I spend half the evening chasing up results when, as BlackJack said, one phone call from each club would make it so much easier.

I hate not being able to publish scorers’ names because I feel the players deserve recognition for their efforts.

If you give me some numbers I’ll try and contact your club next time.

    Cheers!

    Walter

It speaks volumes for your promotion of the game Walter that you feel the need to ring clubs that don’t ring you. The problem by doing this though is that you make a rod for your own back and people don’t bother to call you bacause they know you’ll ring them. Sometimes you might need to bite the bullet and not publish certain club results. I know who’ll scream then. It makes me laugh because the clubs who scream loudest are usually the ones levelling accusations at FFT for not promoting the game. It’s ok folks I’ve taken my grumpy pills this morning!! :-)

Let us ALL take some person responsibility and promote our clubs by giving Walter a call as soon as the game is finished. ;-)

  36. Cheers Walter and yes our web-site is embarrassing at the moment, we are in the process of getting a new one up it should be going by the end of this week I hope, I just tried to find it but it appears to not be there still.

Our number at the club is 03 64313691 (Mobile number forwarded to Walter Pless as personal numbers are not permitted to be posted BJ), but if you give me a number to call I would be happy to call you, It didn’t even cross my mind. Whilst I agree the more our club and others can get promoted the better, I would not have been “screaming loudly” had we missed out on any details being printed.

I think you do a great job down there Walter and I only wish the two Northern papers gave us as much soccer as you get in the Mercury. The Examiner is a distant second and the Advocate even worse, I don’t know where they get the info for the stuff they write.

  37. Clarence 7 d Nelson 0. (P Bremner got the first 3, the rest I can’t recall)

This game showcased the massive difference between a Premier League club and a Division 1 club, both on and off the field. I believe Nelson had 1 shot all day and that was a header into the side of the net. Nelson couldn’t keep a net attached to a crossbar for 90mins, and had no solution for it, with the Clarence manager using his brain and helping them out whilst the Nelson coach was running off looking for an answer.

Someone needs to tell the Nelson players (and the ref) that the FIFA laws (and I think I recall a memo sent to clubs) state that play only stops for seriously injured players (broken bones, head injuries), not cramp and players who are 30cm away from a boundary line, who once an attack is stopped for them, roll over the line and magically walk over to the bench. That’s amateur league stuff of Nelson players/coaches calling for the ball to be kicked out to stop an attack. It’s not a matter of sportsmanship, the referee is in control of the game, he assesses whether it’s a serious injury, otherwise play on till the ball is out of play (exception being a goalkeeper).

I don’t watch m/any division 1 games, but if this Nelson team is an example of them, I struggle to see how it warrants newspaper space over the Premier League Reserves, when the change happened a few years ago. Promotion/relegation reasons perhaps, but overall team quality, no chance. This Nelson team would’ve struggled to beat half of the Division 2 teams, and the best few Division 3 teams. There’s no sign of any future growth either, with no exciting young players to be seen. I don’t even think it was a full Clarence Premier team, yet they still didn’t have to break a sweat all day, and it was obvious all involved in the club were counting down the clock to end the game, and get back into the serious stuff.

    Essay over!

  39. Clarence United became the fifth southern Premier League club to reach the quarterfinals of the Milan Lakoseljac Memorial Trophy State-wide football competition when they beat Division One side Nelson Eastern Suburbs 7-0 away at North Warrane today.

Clarence joins Hobart Zebras, Taroona, South Hobart and Glenorchy Knights from the south, and Launceston City, Somerset and Burnie United from the northern Premier League, in the last eight of the competition.

Nelson, the last of the minnows left in the competition, were no match for their Premier League Eastern Shore rivals and trailed 3-0 at the interval to a hat-trick by Paul Bremner.

Midfielder Kenyi Emmanueli came on as a substitute for Clarence in the 57th minute in place of Dwayne Walsh and he had an immediate impact.

He netted twice and also forced Matthew Rudewych to score an own goal while under pressure to clear after he had made an electrifying run along the right byline.

Bremner added another in the second half to take his tally to four and make the final score 7-0.

Nelson had few chances, the best being when Paul Gazzignato, stationed at the far post, nodded Jackson Marsh’s free-kick from the left into the side-netting.

Clarence often toyed with their opponents and the Premier League outfit, who are 16 places above Nelson if one takes into account the combined ladders, could easily have reached double figures.

“My heart bleeds for them because I think they’re very genuine, they prepared very well and they worked very hard,” said Clarence coach, Andrew Brown.

“At the end of the day, they just weren’t capable technically.”

Nelson coach, Michael Roach, said: “At times we played very well and took it up to them, but we made too many silly mistakes at the back, and they did get a couple of good goals in the end too.”

Player, given the ability of Brett Pullen resting him and Connolly isn’t ,going to change the underlying issue the Zebras are fighting above their weight , Mainella is saving them week after week , the bench strength is poor as was shown Saturday, yeah Pullen will assist , knights have much better attacking options and i note rested 6 players!! By all means sprout the strengths of the Zebra but it in my eyes Friday will be the night of the knights and i am not a knights supporter…

  44. Ril,
Maybe a better indication of the difference between Premier and div 1 was in the match betwwen Uni and Beachside 3-2.
Nelson at the moment are Div 1 strugglers and Clarence are one of the best coached and in form teams in premier league. Not the best comparison from my point of view. I will admit that Div 1 football is very ugly to watch and sometimes very frustrating to be involved in.

    Comment by Steve Pitchford — May 27, 2007 @ 10:41 pm

  46. The result of the Nelson Vs Clarence match was never really in question. 16 places is a big difference. Clarence are a more polished team accross the board, as you would expect of a Premier League team. But there were definately times when Nelson did take it to their opponents, and all the other posts fail to mention that Dwane Walsh, who did manage to beat any div 1 articles to get his very own, was marked out of the game by a simple div 1 centre back. Such a ‘young up and coming’ striker sould be able to run rings around a lowly div 1 back line, but failed to do so. Setting up one goal but little other obvious impact. Resulting in the gun striker being dragged after 57 mins.
The ref was more than happy to stop play for the cramps, with both the players suffering them leaving the field of play and not returning. Mocking the way both teams and the ref handled these situations is childish and unnecessary. Credit does have to be given though to the Clarence players who behaved with a high level of sportsmanship in these circumstances.
If someone ‘ril’ can’t make the time to watch div 1 matches, its a shame because the level of play can actually be quite high and enjoyable to watch at times. But if you don’t watch div 1 its not likely you watch div’s 2 and 3 so you wouldn’t know what the level of play is like, unless of course you play? But if you did know how they play you would know Nelson and most other div 1 clubs are far classier stuff, and Nelson in fact did beat a div 2 and div 1 club (both 4-1) to get to the game today. Not heaps for them to brag about, but just illustrates that they can do it and that ‘ril’ isn’t quite sure what he/she is on about.
There is no doubt that Clarence were the better team of the day. But 7 nil might not reflect the level of competition going on on the park as a few of those were made through ’silly mistakes at the back.’ All in all Nelson should be comended for actually having a go at the classier outfit, and showing a bit of heart.

    Comment by ralph — May 27, 2007 @ 10:59 pm

  47. I’d just like to point out that Nelson were on the park against Clarence today because we had won our two previous matches in the qualifying rounds v Barnestoneworth (div 3) & Dosa (div 1) by 4 - 1 margins. Thats the whole point of cup football, you win you keep playing & it’s interesting to see a clash between divisions. It’s also probably worth remembering that Clarence are unbeaten this season & are quite a good side in Premier league. Personally I was very happy with the first half from our players where we passed the ball well & kept possession in midfield, worked hard & had some real individual winners against premier league opponents. We couldn’t make much going into our attacking third but that’s a reflection of some good work from clarence & our own limitations. Two bad errors in defence & a turnover in midfield were clinically punished by Clarence for what I feel was a scoreline not reflected by the balance of play. The 2nd half was a better display from Clarence who did get on top & certainly some of our players started to run out of legs. There is a gap between Premier & Div 1 but not quite the yawning chasm that some think (have a look at Taroona). Good luck to Clarence, I think they’ve got a good young team & certainly played this match in the right spirit. Our own team is largely made up of 21 year olds with one or two guys in their mid twenties & with a youth program building up we feel our future can be very bright. We look forward to next years cup.

    Comment by Michael Roach — May 27, 2007 @ 11:05 pm

  48. I hold no grudges against Nelson, just giving my views on what I paid to see today.

I watch plenty of games, play myself, and have been a referee in the past, so I’d say that’s enough qualifications to give my thoughts on which league a team belongs in or plays like. With the 16 places argument, they went behind to a team 25 places below them in the previous round before beating them 4-1. That doesn’t really set them too far above them in my eyes.

In regards to the Dwayne Walsh comment, fair enough, I didn’t really see that much clear defence winning over attack with him, although it wasn’t up my end of the ground. From my view it seemed they were playing a social/junior league brand of the whole team being in 1/3 of the pitch, creating no room for creative/running play which I believe is Dwayne’s specialty. If there was one defender responsible for stopping him, was he then responsible for his replacement scoring 2 goals in the next 20mins, and practically the 3rd which was an own goal?

The ref shouldn’t have been happy to stop play Real Bob, as it’s against the laws of the game, and the way referees have been told to handle such cases. The one in particular that bugged me was a dangerous looking Clarence attack being stopped with the guy next to the sideline finding the abilitiy to walk once play was stopped. In all my years as a player, I’ve not once wanted the game to stop for such a reason, and consider it along the same lines as diving. Frustrating for all involved, and it makes it harder to tell if someone is seriously injured or not with some of the carry-on that happens from the players/coaches.

Anyway, it sounds like I’m having a crack at Nelson, I’m not. There was a dig at the fact Div 1 & reserves gets more coverage than the Premier Reserves, but that doesn’t really bother me too much either. As I said, I was just giving my views of the game I saw today. All the best to Nelson, good luck with the youth program you’re building up - you should have a massive zone to recruit such players from, so hopefully next time I see your team it’ll include some of them with potential.

Blackjack - a little thought after a fairly bland trip to Burnie, why is it that we as players are told that swearing in an audible way is a straight red because of the want to attract more women, kids etc to watch the game, yet the crowd can then swear and abuse players in a manner that players never do (audibly anyway)? It’s ironic that the rules on players are designed to attract more spectators, yet the players show the spectators the meaning of sportsmanship!

  51. Good point charlie white, never have understood the fact that there are worse things coming from the mouth of overzealous supporters than could ever come from many footballers mouths. I believe unless it is directed at a referee than swearing should be allowed, within reason of course. If you miss a tap in, or fumble the ball over the line I think a little understanding is needed by referees. I guess I had better comment on the Statewide cup then..
Nelson got to that point by winning, it is just there bad luck that they got a good Clarence side. 7-0 by the bottom of div 1 against an undefeated premier league team is not really that bad.
Good to see Taroona continuing there good form. Would like to see there next round opponent. They stand a good chance of continuing in this years cup.
Frank Mainella is good proof of championship teams needing champion keepers. He is saving Zebras every week. Showing great form, and his movement is really good for a husky man (no offence to Frank).
The winner could well be a non southern team. I think Burnie with Crosswell can challenge the Southern teams some more. The Glenorchy Knights with some luck could win this cup that means so much to them. If Huigsloot keeps scoring it isn’t out of the realm.
Sorry didn’t intend to say so much!!!

  52. Dear Ril

The Mercury used to regard the reserve league as the second-ranked competition and Division One as the third-ranked.

Since promotion/relegation was introduced, it made sense to regard that as the second tier and to cover that in more detail than the reserves as they were actually playing for a tangible reward. It could be argued that the reserves is a stronger competition, but I think the promotion/relegation issue has precedence in the eyes of the general populace.

Giving Division One and reserves any coverage at all is a bonus when compared to sports such as rugby and hockey so we should be thankful.

    Cheers!

  53. it would be very interesting to see how reserves teams would go against DIV 1 teams - certainly some of the top reserves teams would be on par with them and also defeat some of the lower ranked teams like the Huon Valleys. Thoughts??

  57. The Fotak Report

I have asked Tommy Fotak if he would give a brief description of the weekend matches he watches just to get a different point of view. After much reluctence here is Tommy’s first report

    ——————————————————

Devonport City would have travelled home disappointed after going down 3-1 to Hobart Zebras after extra time. Both sides were under strength as the Zebras decided to rest Brett Pullen and Michael Connolly and the Strikers were without John Compagne. The absence of Compagne would have been a relief to the Zebras as his height and aerial ability at set pieces is a concern for any defence.

The Zebras had the best of the ball in the early exchanges but failed to break through the well organised Strikers defence. Whilst a fan of attacking football I greatly appreciate the art of defending and the Strikers were amongst the best I have seen this year. The Zebras have some wonderful ball carriers in Brazendale and Self but the Strikers backline held their feet and closed the space without over committing but more importantly and something I haven’t seen for sometime they got second defenders across early. At one point Brazendale made a mockery of the Strikers midfield with some wonderful skill and speed but the Strikers defence slowed and eventually halted his run. This level of organisation staccatoed the Zebras movement resulting in players being caught on the ball. Devonport had the best chance of the first half when they attacked down their right and a wonderful cross was sent to the arriving Mackenna who just failed to connect. His run left me wondering why we don’t see more forwards attacking the front post. Playing a 4-4-2 the Zebras needed their fullbacks to get involved in attacking play but there seemed to be an invisible wall on the halfway line stopping them. Ultimately this contributed to their lack of penetration.

The usually calm Nick Lapolla had a few words to say at half time and the Zebras came out a different side. They were sharper and faster. In particular Eion Nicholson was pushing forward from defence creating an extra attacking outlet. The opening goal, was deservedly scored by the hard running Lapolla. If he can manage to hold his feet – he was slipping over regularly, he will cause defences numerous problems.

Devonport replied almost instantly thanks in part to an uncharacteristic mistake from the peerless Mainella when he failed to claim a ball he had come for.

The game started to open up as the two teams tired and this suited the Strikers more as their quick, long balls found Mackenna whose influence was growing. The Strikers should have sealed the match in this period but failed to score in one on one situations with Mainella showing his worth again.

Some clever subsitutions and superior fitness saw the Zebras dominate extra time as Tom Howells came on for Cox and Fagg was pushed into midfield. Mark Falzon was immense in extra time and duly got the Zebras second after some neat work by Ricky Self out on the right, beating his defender and sending a teasing ball over the ‘keeper Howe where Falzon arrived. Self and substitute Dylan Fennell both had chances to kill the game as Zebras totally dominated with tireless Brazendale, Fagg and Ryan Smith coming to the fore. It was left to Brazendale to finish the scoring when he created some space for himself before shooting past a defender and ‘keeper Howe to put the ball into the far side netting.

Man of the match: Ryan Smith; Falzon was brilliant in extra time and Mainella made some crucial saves but Ryan Smith was the most consistent and performed player of the full 120 minutes. He prefers his role in a 3 man defence but he covered his other defenders well and made some wonderful interceptions.

Moan of the match: Defenders not getting involved in attacks. The 4-4-2 formation can liberate defenders but none seem to take the opportunity.

  58. It’s great to see Frank Mainella get the recoginition he deserves, he’s been the best for years and too often his contribution has been over looked. However I think people are taking it to the extreme when they say he is saving the Zebras every week. The Zebras have scored 13 more goals than their nearest competitor. I have no doubt Frank influences games with some of the saves he makes but I truly feel the goals for column has been over looked here.

    Comment by Tommy — May 28, 2007 @ 12:50 pm

  59. Jackson is the best player Nelson has signed for many years. He played well in the centre mid-field creating what play Nelson did have. Occassionally got stripped of the ball because he often had few options to go to. Had no opportunities on goal, but Nelson’s one clear scoring chance, a back-post header from Paul Gazzignato, was taken from a superbly placed Jackson Marsh free kick. One of Nelson’s better players on the day.

  60. Hey Sent off and the rest of the Zebras doubters, why is it that everytime Bubble has a great game and makes some important saves people say that we’d be “lost without him” or “if it wasnt for Frank”, as steven hawkings football boots said a great team needs a great goalkeeper, next time a great striker like hugi or walshy score 3-4 goals in a game and no one else scores, I’d like to see someone mention that that team would be “lost without them” or say “if it wasnt for them” - just some food for thought.

  62. Good Point Midge - will take into context of next Zebra post - however did Mainella have a great game ? yes , did he save your bacon ? yes when do keepers get credit ? only on this blog !! maybe refs will notice that just cause strikers score goals and as such record their names that people who save goals are just as valuable when awarding votes. Strikers play for glory - keepers play for keeps !!

  65. Sent Off,

I have noticed in recent weeks that 90% of your posts are used to explain how bad zebras are. You say that they’re oppositions have players out, its unnatractive football, they are lucky and over acheiving, no depth and that subsitutes and reserves are crap and that frank is the only reason they are winning. I have always been a big fan of Mainella and do think he contributes greatly to the zebras but why do you find it neccessary to bag Zebras 90% of the time. Mate by all means have an opinion but dont hate a club for no reason.
Also could you explain your problems with the Zebras?

Player, to each his own. Sent off is putting forward an opinion based on some ‘reasonable’ (if somewhat slanted) information/beliefs. I don’t think he/she is required to justify why he/she thinks that way. On the other hand you are also, more than entitled to put you slanted opinions being one of the zebras ‘faithful’. :-) BJ

  67. I did mention this elsewhere but I understand that this very night Clarence have lost their star striker to Heldleberg in the V League. The club will obviously be sorry to see him go but I have it on good authority that he goes with their blessing and support. Hopefully the first of many of the current crop of young players from all clubs that will be able to develop in that direction.

  73. Sorry to disappoint you “A Whisper”, but Walshy hasn’t signed for anyone and he’ll be playing for Clarence against University on Saturday.

I was at FFT Headquarters with him, ready to interview him and get a photo of him signing the contract, but the lad had a last-minute change of heart.

I don’t blame him. He’s young and he needs more time to consider his options. Heidelberg (that’s the club) didn’t give him much time to think about it and faxed him the forms virtually minutes before he was expected to sign them. He thought about it and decided to decline the offer at this stage. More mature players would have baulked at making such a decision in such a short space of time, let alone an 18-year-old.

No wonder professional players nowadays have agents and managers.

Good on you, Walshy. You obviously don’t sign cheese sandwiches. Your time will come and then you’ll be ready.

What exactly is a ‘bland trip to Burnie’?
are you describing the way you played or what?

    Comment by Hugo — May 28, 2007 @ 11:35 pm

  75. Dwayne, just read of the above news and your invite to Heidelberg. Even if it didn’t happen this time around it’s just the tip of the iceberg. If this is your goal it will come, especially to a lad like you, who doesn’t mind hard work to realise your goals.

    Hang in there kid.

    Comment by Brad Hughes — May 28, 2007 @ 11:45 pm

  76. Good one Walter…thanks for the info….If that’s the way it was done then the young lad has made the right decision and shown great maturity. As Brad Hughes said…if there was one offer there will be more.
Interesting to note the comments on the other players in recent Blogs…Shay Hickey will be missed for his talent and flair…and to be honest as far as keepers go, I wouldn’t care if either Frank Mainella or Michael Moz were in goal for my team. Neither of them would let you down and could play at about any level in this country.

Player - having watched Juventus - Zebras since the Gorkovski - Farrachio - Previdi - Edwards and now Lapolla era- sorry if i have missed off a couple of coaches ( or miss spelt english not my strong suit)- i have seen many highs and lows but in general apart from when we have english based coaches we have treid to play the beautiful game- pass move possession game - attacking football.Yeah i follow Juventus but i do not get carried away with way we play - we have three strong player Mainella - Smith ( how could any coach play him anywhere but central defender ??and Pullen, they form the backbone of the side - the rest are like Rheem hot water cylinder - never know if hot or cold - when hot for 15 min we great when cold 60 min we struggle only strong 3 consistant.
Player i continue to watch to say my thing maybe i’m watching you and you not like what i say on here - as muckery say freedom of speech thank Blackjack

It’s a major step to get into a vic premier side. would you/he be in the senior team or u/19? have to say u/19’s wouldn’t you? Matty Sanders is i think a bit more of total footballer, placement, as well as power, and two feet, just to name a few things. Not just a finisher. A whisper, Turn it up, Mos and bubble in any comp in this country? tell you now, The Vic, Nsw, And Sa Premier teams have some bloody outstanding keepers… Would be very hard to be no.1. 85. Fully agree with your comments Charlie White ,re a bland trip to Burnie.
That is what State wide competitions are all about. South to North West a long journey. Harder on Southern clubs unused to travel. As for the performance of your team they made it an enjoyable match to watch.
The long journey home is less inspiring for a defeated team.

    Comment by gerry gunton — May 30, 2007 @ 10:18 am

  86. gerry gunton - too true, too true. It is a long way, not that you can begrudge a random draw. The northern teams have a bit more travel than us in their league, something that I don’t miss from state league. Glad that the game was enjoyable to watch, i thought there were many from both teams who were not really switched on for whatever reason, thus detracting from a playing point of view. Burnie and Somerset next round will be a blockbuster, with many fans going up the road to support both teams I am sure.
