  1. Call me biased but I find it hard to believe that Pitchford has been selected - he was even dropped for the most recent SWC round. Surely Moshoganis would be a better second keeper to Mainella, not just skill-wise but as a team player? I agree that Mainella should be in the squad but not Pitchford.

Obviously this team wasn’t related to ladder positions either, with the 10th, 8th and 5th teams having more players than the 4th placed team. I don’t know what the reason behind this is other than that the 4th team, Clarence, is more of a ‘team’ than the others who are more dependent on stars? I’m happy to be proved wrong.

  2. Surprised not to see Huigy in there, must have made himself unavailable? Hardest player to mark when the service is good. Clarence definetely hard done by, Cannamela stands out for them at the back, also Bremner and Kenyi possibly.
Pitchford for me over Mos tho. Mainella deserves the no.1 spot.
Peter appears to be a little hot and cold.
Have always thought Nathan Robinson was a bit over rated, cant remember seeing or hearing about him do much over the last few years. Im sure Tsimiklis from Olympic would have been in had he a played a few more games, best left back seen in Hobart for a few years.
Things will change, some players will pull out.
Other than that seems reasonable. Some of the young Kingboro boys unlucky but those selected have proved themselves over the years.

  3. No Charlie White. No Marcello Marchioli. No Mark Iseli. What are you thinking Eamonn??

    Comment by Lionheart — June 23, 2007 @ 9:43 am

  4. surprised that there was not more south players seeing as everyone seems to be saying that they are the best team on paper etc etc

  5. some intetresting decisions, the majority is right but also agree Mozza ahead of Pitchy - do rate pitchy tho. B interesting to see which 10 players get cut. Kenni Emanuelli was stiff along with Canamella. Whilst White, Marchioli and Iseli are all quality players i’m not sure who you would replace them with. I thin Billy G is probably the only one that might come out?? Let the Debates begin.

  6. Yes Juice Tom Huigsloot you’d think would be a walk-up start. Who knows? Lionheart - looking at it from a Kingborough point of view I can understand what you’re thinking, they were quite unlucky, especially Iseli…and 4 Knights players (plus Huigsloot)??? Don’t understand that.

  9. just noticed that not 1 metro player what about kaden over pitchy !!

I think you need to play in SPL to be considered. I believe Kaden is only playing U/19 :-) BJ

  10. After watching today’s game between South & Kingborough the omission of Marc Iseli from the Southern training squad is just lunacy. Marc was close to best on ground and virtually shut Dogger out of the game.

    Comment by Lionheart — June 23, 2007 @ 6:51 pm

  11. I have no idea which League Kaden is in, but considering the top 3 Metro teams are each averaging 3 goals against them per game, I don’t think the goalkeeper would be up there for selection as the best in the South..

Pitchy is in the southern squad (deservedly so too I might add) and he’s in the team that’s holding up the foot of the ladder It might have something to do with the other players in front of them. Just a wild guess… ;-) BJ

  12. very very strong squad!! and yes red and black u are biased…. lol

    Comment by Corey Smith — June 23, 2007 @ 10:33 pm

  13. BJ, that’s true, although I thought he’d be an exception due to my understanding that he only came back to their team a month or 2 ago, and their results have been better than the 3 goal average mentioned, and there’s many mentions of him keeping well on this site and Walter’s reports.

Perhaps some of the other keepers are made to look better by the players in front of them also?!

    Comment by Ril — June 23, 2007 @ 11:03 pm

  14. I think you may find that Kaden is not playing at all.

  15. I’m a bit surprised not to see the likes of Alexis Bull, Mark Iseli and Hugh Ludford in this squad. Very surprised to see some old war horses such as Rappers & Robbo. With all due respect, these guys need to step aside. You just needed to watch Robinson & Iseli in action yesterday to know which player you would select.

  16. Haven’t been to the only training so far due to work but questions will always be put up re possibles and old vrs young players, a mix anywhere has proven to be true France for example !!! Unfortunately people will miss out that others believe should be there, such is life… What has been chosen is a strong squad no doubt, but that squad will not do anything unless Football Tasmania cancel the round of the 15th July, silly to think they will have a competitive game before the A league one if 90% of the players played the day before… Also If I was a club president and my team had numerous players selected would I allow them to play when the season is in the balance?????

Just a thought, if you want a good game cancel the round, encourage more supporters, re schedule the others during Lacka rounds or Wednesday nights and make this first one a real one not a “shite” let’s put one together … But who am I to think like this!!!!

  17. What do Sam Canamella and Paul Bremner have to do to get fair recognition for their efforts. Sam was outstanding on Saturday and Paul has some of the best one touch skills I have seen recently, especially for a player that can’t seem to buy a free kick.
Pitchford got horribly caught out against Clarence on the week end and, despite my belief that he is an excellent keeper I feel that height is his biggest enemy. Also there needs to be consideration for the organisational skills Moschogiannis brings to the defence.
Each person picking a squad will look for different talents I guess but my first question with Beecroft and Begovic is whether or not they would last the niinety minutes.
Anyway good luck to all those selected and hopefully it will be a great game to watch.
I do agree with the earlier comments however that the games this week end should be postponed in order for players to be made available for the rep game. Clarence probably won’t mind given the selections but Zebra’s might.

  18. For all the positives out of playing representative football - a challenge this state needs - the flow on from this should be a meaningful State senior game, FFT go and stuff it up!! only not football people would roster games on the given weekend - are they for real ? or just have no idea about the game - maybe i am wrong , but if this scenario is to continue , if I was a club president I would be saying to my players - sorry club comes first , especially if i were in the bottom 3 or top 4 still in with a chance of winning the league.

Be fair to the players and the clubs and the Tasmanian football public either do it right or call it off - Brett is right midweek - or Lacka cup game weekends can be used to catch up games - reserves and 19 can still be played as scheduled - 5 games north and south is all we are talking about!!

  19. I was surprised as many that Mos was not in the team, also unbelieving that Iseli is not there, for me the best defender going around, totally unrecognised and just ask any striker who he has marked if they had an easy game or got any easy ball, answer is no Browny got a bit of a touch up on the weekend thanks to Marc, if Brown is the starting striker (possibly) then I want Marc in the back line! If Abetz can get in as a man marker plain and simple then surely Iseli (and Sammy C for that matter) must at least get a look in?

  20. Who will replace Chris Sanita in this squad? The lad signs for Brunswick tomorrow and is expected to turn out for the ‘Blues’ this weekend.

    Comment by Lionheart — June 25, 2007 @ 3:48 pm

  21. surely cormac collins should be in this squad he’s been the eagles best player all year and put everything into his game every week and has been performing absoulty brillant … im devastated and disgraced he’s not in this squad a shame

    Comment by qwaszx — June 25, 2007 @ 5:08 pm

  22. Collins is inteed a good player and unlucky to mis out on selection. I feel it is his strength on the ball that lets him down… Sure his pace and skill are an excellent credit, but his strength on and off the ball lacks a little.. With Sanita on the way to the big time, perhaps Danny Lapolla could replace him?? He is a talented young player… It all depends on what Kelly wants for his side…. Daniel is a in and under player and could be a huge threat to a biggish Northern Defence???

Also unusual to see A.Telega getting a chance? Watching him play for most of this season, he seems to be a little out of his depth! Perhaps the pressures of the club are getting to him or… At least there are many young Eagle players who have shown huge potential all over the park!

  23. I’ll name a few things pitchy has over mossy, 1.Better reflex’s 2. Safer hands 3. Can kick 50% better, 4.and is still young. Yeah his height may be a factor, but he deserves a spot. Look at any of the keepers in there, and there training ethic and form isn’t bad at all this season.

If Moz was to come in maybe it would be at the expense of Peter? Ben hasn’t been at his best this year… BJ

    Comment by studzup — June 25, 2007 @ 7:37 pm

  24. Maybe BJ, you probably right. Although he was in the team last year. But you’d have to say it was only last week he wasn’t up to his best, and that’d be because he’s had tonsiltis the last two weeks, and he’s done well to play at all. What games have you seen this year BJ?

    Comment by studzup — June 26, 2007 @ 10:08 am

  25. Would Janko last the game? Are you serious?
Janks has been best on ground for knights in at least 7-8 games this year, ultra solid down back and he creates goals from his overlapping and runs.

    Comment by Chalky — June 27, 2007 @ 12:41 am

  26. No one doubts Janko’s football ability or his fitness. My question related more to temprament in a big game.

    Comment by A Whisper — June 27, 2007 @ 8:29 am

  27. I think this is little harsh on Janko, he has been a bit loose in the past but I can’t remember the last time when he was sent off. He seems to have mellowed a bit in his old age!

    Comment by charlie white — June 27, 2007 @ 10:28 am

  28. yeah i am with you charlie. best defender i have played alongside and one of the hardest i had played against. Janko and Ryan Smith should be walk up starters in my opinion.
I would definately have janko at sweeper when u look at the quality of player he will be surrounded with. Just on temperament in big games a whisper? anyone remember when Tasmanian U/23 side played Melb Knights U/23 (when they were in national league) at york park?? Janko Begovic would have been close to Tassie’s best along with Ben Harbinson, Josh Fielding and Ricky Eaves!!! guess that answers that question? as replacement for sanita i would suggest no-one else out there would go into the final squad outside the players already picked so why not include a young player (16-17 yr old) that may just benefit from the trainings. Went and saw Beachside play sunday and Tony Kavanagh’s young son was kicking about(jake)… why not someone like this who will obviously be a star of the future? but then i guess there are the likes of Tom Roach who probably deserve a chance to be included?

    Comment by Corey Smith — June 27, 2007 @ 3:04 pm

  29. also a whisper….. canamella and bremner nowhere near up to it!

  30. Hard for me to see how last year’s Vic Tuting Medallist couldn’t win a spot in the side

    Comment by BG 60 MIN — June 27, 2007 @ 3:35 pm

  31. Roach & Sanita are in there. Sanita has gone to Brunswick City so won’t be available.

    Comment by Blackjack — June 27, 2007 @ 3:57 pm

  32. Hey Corey, I think Clarence’s Cannamela and Bremner spoke for themselves…seems to me the Knights lost twice to a side with these two players in there? Correct me if I’m wrong.

To be quite honest Jacob Kavanagh doesn’t have the temperament to be a really good player. Sure, he has the skill, but not a great deal of pace, and he’s not really a team player either. Happy to eat my words though.

    Comment by redandblack — June 28, 2007 @ 7:29 am

  33. Redandblack, you can’t justify their selection just because they played against Knights in a Winning team.
In the last game Bremner did nothing against Knights, and Cannamela played solid but wasn’t outstanding, noone was in that game.

Sure they’re both good players, but there are way too many better options in defence and up front to put them in in my opinion.

    Comment by Chalky — June 28, 2007 @ 11:08 am

  34. Going on the young theme, what about Danijel Djekanovic and Yousef Mohamad from Olympic?
Olympic aren’t all of a sudden in the top 3 and challenging because the more experienced players are playing better.
Great talents, Danijel has a great left peg and excellent work rate. Yousef is a good tough tackling defender and id rather him marking the bigger Launny players than Abetz from Taroona.

  35. Is it just me or is Clarence’s Walsh’s first name not begin with an M?

No it’s you. Walsh has a christian name of Dwayne. Not that I’m sure what this has to do with anything. BJ

  36. Is Chalky and Corey the Same person? Cannamella and Bremner are guns plain and simple and whilst maybe not making the final 11 for the southern team should be in the top 25-30 players in the league, both well ahead of your good self Corey

Looks like we might have a playground fight!!! Come on guys, it’s personal opinion. Leave it at that. sheesh… BJ

  37. Northern Team looking very promising- strong at the back, flashy through the middle, deft up front - predict a very even encounter and there should be some great soccer played given the excellent surface and atmosphere of venue…

    North to win 3-1…

Crozza double and Eaves to be the scorers!!! …and then Benny will wake up!!! :-D BJ

    Comment by ben crosswell — July 2, 2007 @ 8:32 pm

  38. when will the final 16 be named? - match day?

You may very well have a squad of 16 to be named for match 1 with the remaining players training on and then used in game 2. That’s just my guess and it’;s a feasible as anything else kicking around here. :-) BJ

    Comment by sj — July 2, 2007 @ 11:22 pm

  39. I heard a rumour that not many have been training in the southern squad, so it might be all those that have trained are selected.

    Comment by Tommy — July 3, 2007 @ 9:19 am

  40. bj
This game is a stand alone.
There will be two games at end of season - one north and one south. Yes the larger squad will train-on till end of season but the 16 for the 15th should have been named by now.
