As stated by Hugo, this week is somewhat of blockbuster, as three of the four games will have an effect on this years premiership. First up Somerset will host Launceston City in what would have to be the fixture of the weekend. The Somerset faithful will be warming to the idea that they could well go back to back this year and this weekend, the shark park bell will get a work out one way or the other.
.
Somerset keep banging in the goals on the fast breaks, and have an explosively quick side, The Eaves are some of the quickest players going about, and will tare the City back line to pieces is they get put on a run. One thing that will work against them is a basic lack in the height stakes. City have some tall timber and this will be used to great effect from corners and set plays. Still on this occasion, Somerset will create and finish too many opportunities for City, who always manage to put away their chances when presented, even if they are few and far between.
.
Ulverstone are at home for the second straight week, and this time face a similar task to last week in Prospect Knights. Ulverstone were competitive in pockets last week against Rangers, and had luck fallen their way early on, may just have got more from their 3-0 loss. This week will be much of the same against Knights. The ground size is on parr with what Prospect are used to, so it will come down to who makes the most of what is presented. These two sided will be similar in many aspects of the park, but Prospect missing mid field play maker Dean Slater, may have an adverse effect. Slater, while not the fittest, posses the ability to create chances from midfield and score from Range. With out him they will look McCormack, Claxton and Baker to step up a level. Ulverstone on the other hand just need to find away to score up the other end, but one feels this week is not going to be the break through week and Knights may just get away with the points.
.
Northern Rangers have a chance to throw open the gateway to a four way title race if they can over come a full strength Devonport at the NTCA. Rangers have had very close games with Devonport of late and in the last 6 results have not seen either side score more than twice, in fact Devonport have beaten Rangers 2-1 in 3 of the last 6 encounters while Rangers have won 2-1 and 2-0 with a draw the other result.
.
Rangers will be hard up this week to steal a result however. The side is weaker with a number of players out for the season, including Sam Luck and Nick Schipper. Geraint Williams has enioyed a purple patch of late, barely putting a foot wrong in the past 3 months. But he will have to be at his very pest to deal with Gilham, Compagne and Mckenna who are all enjoying good form, not to mention Comandari who retuned with a goal in their last match and whole host of players keeping the side in its rightful position at the top end of the table.
.
Its hard to see the Rangers doing too many favors this week for the rest of the competition but its certainly not out of the question. I’m sure it will be another close game and the result may yet be decided in the dying moments of the game, as they have so often been between these two sides.
.
Riverside will host Burnie at Windsor park, and the conditions will be almost certainly boggy and hard to play attractive football in. Windsor Park sits almost at the same level as the Tamar river and struggles to drain even the lightest sprinkling of rain, and as we have had a fair dump earlier in the week, the ground will be boggy at best. This wont provide either side with a clear cut advantage, only that Riverside will be familiar with the way the ball moves in the mud, more so than Burnie. If anything, it will hold up Burnies free flowing style at present, Croswell, deBomford and the Smiths will get no assistance from the slow surface and the defenses of both sides will have to be careful not to go to early. Goals could come from distance here, and both sides can knock them in from Range if the chance is presented. A physical Burnie, who know any chance of a title will mean every game has to be a win, may well be hungrier from the start, as they always are, but if the game doesn’t produce them a goal early, their opponents often find themselves wrestling the momentum back and stealing a point or three at the death. Another 3-1 result is my prediction and I would have to go with Burnie after some improved performances of late.
Somerset 3-1
Knights 2-3
Devonport 2 Rangers 2
Burnie 3-1
.
The Reserves I can only hope its a draw between Somerset and City and if Rangers get over Devonport the title is done!

Well things didn’t quite go the way of my wish list. Thanks Rangers for playing your part of my plan shame we couldn’t do the job and it looks like Somerset may have a fairly strong grip on the title right now, but it is not over just yet (waiting for the fat lady)
I have heard rumours and maybe C.A. you can help me out, what happened during the senior game. Did things get a little heated? are reports of 2 reds being shown to non-playing team members true?
Who was the dreaded man in the middle?
Speaking of refs:
Can anybody clear up a reffing decicion for me. In our game the ref had to go off at half time with a pulled calf. One of the linesmen took the middle, thats is all fine. The part I questioned and didn’t get a reasonable answer is: Why did the linesman who had the Riverside forwards in the first half change ends and look after them again, leaving an over zealous club linesman to look after our forwards, flagging on most forward thrusts. The other linesman, as I pointed out to the retired ref, was not keeping up with play at all and was never in a position to call an offside.
I always say at least if their is a bad ref or linesman at least both teams get the same advantage or disadvantage, this time for whatever reason we had it both halfs.
I know this sounds like a whinge but I am interested as to why it happened.
Comment by Hugo — July 22, 2007 @ 10:23 am
Rangers did the job for Somerset with a fine build up and finish to TT on the half hour mark. His first goal for the season! He had further opportunities but was cleared off the line after rounding the keeper and was unable to finish another one on one with the keeper when the nearest other player was 20 yards away. Funky missed an open goal when Howie dived into space and the ball was kicked to hand. Another two open goals somehow went over the bar.
.
On the other hand Devonport had some strong passages particularly in the first half but was thwarted by a scrambling defense or poor final third distribution.
.
The second half was exciting as Devonport searched for an equalizer but resilient defense and outstanding keeping from Marshall Pooley held them at bay. Just past the hour mark Devonport were rewarded with a penalty which was highly laughable if not for the seriousness of the situation. Kamil dived at the legs of the official - Michael Pel and a penalty was given. Many players were incensed by the decision with Pel in the centre of controversy, not for the first time, in a very ordinary game for the centre man.
.
Comandari took the stop kick which was well saved by Pooley. Many comments followed with Pel issuing a yellow to the player, ‘G’ Williams, responsible for the infringing penalty. He later told me that he indicated to Pel that the ensuing result was justified for which he was carded for. At the this stage I was still ropeable with the penalty despite it being saved and told Pel loudly, not swearing, that the original dive from Kamil should have been carded and not my player. Pel in turn came straight over and asked me to retire behind the fence for the remainder of the match. No warning nothing just go!
.
With 15 minutes remaining I was joined by Tom McGinn for showing frustration at a lineslady in colourful language. Five minutes later Comandari was shown a red for a second bookable offense but it didn’t stop Snowy coming forward and causing havoc for the last minutes. Devonport pushed hard for the goal but it wasn’t to be despite numerous goal mouth scrambles. Rangers had amble opportunity to finish them off but compounded the situation by missing easy chances.
Rangers won reserves 3-1 after it was 1-1 with 20 minutes remaining and the unders saw Devonport come back in the second half to win 2-1.
Rangers are back in numbers again and will be very competitive in the final three rounds especially against Somerset and L City. Our ressies all but wrapped up the premiership today with a solid fighting result. Only goal difference will count against us now.

If there are two official assistant referees they stay on the same line for 90 minutes. Where there are two CLUB linemen then most referees will ask that they run the line in the half of their clubs defence. Part of the logic here is that if they put up an offside flag against the opposing side it is easier to over rule that flag (becasue player not interfering etc) than attempt to blow for offside when no flag has been raised which might be the case if the lineman was looking after his clubs forwards. It would seem this logic was applied to your game - to me this is the better of the two options available. If the option had been taken then I can imagine your concerns if the flag stayed down and an ‘offside’ goal was scored.

I agree the ref was hard to follow in the seniors as at times there were some decisions made that weren’t made in the first half, But i do hear on the grape vine you had good referee in the u18 game can you tell me if this is so as i am concerned about the standard of refereeing dropping off. As a paying fan i like to see a good game of football not referees constantly blowing the game up to make them selves seen or heard or even look like an weight bumble bee.

NO I AM NOT as it cost me $12.00 to get in to watch 45 min of the reserves game and around 30 to 40 min of the senior game i left because the standard of refereing was disapointing in my eyes and spoilin what i hoped to be a good game. maybe if the clubs canvased FFT for better quality or education for there referees the standard of referees might improve, the question has to be qasked would any of the referees in the north get to ref a cup game or any southern senior prem league game in hobart

Funky’s old man gave me a copy of your program from the weekend, have you never heard of plagerism?
Nice article, I am still on the case but still unsolved to date.
Regardinf refs, I agree that the standard up here is a worry, but there is no point in us all complaining because we do need these guys. Somebody needs to come up with a solution, I don’t have one.
Comment by Hugo — July 24, 2007 @ 8:27 am
I would suggest we cut the referee’s some slack, if we keep having a crack at them every time they dont put in a 10 out of 10 performance, we wont have any full stop. I dont see this sort of crit thrown upon players who dont perform up to standard, sure a few lines here and the that might suggest that someone had a bad game, but never this sort of attention. And I see it more and more. I was disapointed to see the treatment of the referees at Rangers vs Devonport on the weekend from both sides. esspecially after the second send off of a coach, after repeated request from the centre referee for the coach to leave the field of play, the assistant coach showed total disresepct and arrogance toward him and his lines women! no wonder Pel dosent want to return next year!
Comment by Captain Australia — July 24, 2007 @ 8:44 am
Mmm, interesting comments re refereeing. Yep, you’ve got to take care of them in the north, as at least two walked away last season, an important and well-respected coach was forced to leave this year and I know of two current refs who are thinking of not coming back next year. So what do you do about it? Well, from one particular instance earlier this season I think that perhaps the clubs can do more to take care of the referees they’ve got. Instead of constant bagging, perhaps get together and come up with positive solutions to your problems, because in a couple of years time, you won’t have any refs, and therefore, you won’t have a comp. I think you’ve got to remember that referees, like players, have off days. You also must remember that in a game an individual player will make many more mistakes than what a referee ever will.
Comment by onlooker — July 24, 2007 @ 9:13 am
As a new Referee my self to the game this year it is hard to workout if i will stay on next year or not the Refs do get a hard time during the game but to me that is all part of it but there is a limit you can take both as a person and as a Ref . With guys constantly bagin the Refs you would have to wonder would they pull on the Black shirt and do a better job? Or would they pull it on at all ? On a personal note i want to say that I love to Ref as it gives me an involvment in the game for which i played for over 30 yrs so what next best thing to be involved as a Ref and still be involved in something i love doing.
We all need to rember law 18 common sense and use it at all the right times in life and in a game as Ref and as a player .

I believe we do our best at Rangers to ensure Refs dont get slamed by the players on the pitch.. Most referees are smart enough to know when it is the heat of the moment and when it is just plan contempt and so on.
As for spectators, well you can do little about their comments and they generally are aimed at both refs and opposition players.
.
I would at this point pass on my thanks to the current list of referee’s who officiate in the north, by and large the job is done well by the likes of Pel, Parr, Jurkovic and others. a couple of really good refs starting to appear on the North West also, which is good to see, as I never enjoy playing under some of the senior (in the true sense of the word) referees down there.
.
My point remains, if the likes of Pel and Parr do indeed pack it in and leave we will have no one to blame but ourselves (some more than others) and that will be a real problem.
.
Each club should be responsable for their players and bench staff in keeping a lid on the over the top reactions to the refs calls based on the way he sees it! at the end of the day, a poor referee is better than a club referee any day, I can tell you that for free!
Comment by Captain Australia — July 24, 2007 @ 11:00 am
Could I also make one suggestion to the referee’s in all seriousness. Start handing out the yellows and reds for discent, have a meeting and decide to crack down on it once and for all, warn the players at kick off that they will be given one warning and after that they will be taking showers before half time if they want to carry on like ugly parents of the juniors! clamp down on it straight away, use your fft given powers and silence em with a small rectangular piece of plastic! easy as that! it seemed to work pretty well when they did a blitz on the F bomb! cant see why it would work for descent!
.
I might add it seems as if they have relaxed there stance on audable foul language? a fair few got away with it on Saturday! very simple rule, if the ref hears it, send him off!

CA, dissent was seen as a priority area in the not too distant past - take a look at:
http://www.soccertas.org.au/refereeinfo/dissent%20memo.pdf
Perhaps some referees have become lapse in their policing of dissent, or perhaps the issue has become lost under the weight of other priorities.
Comment by onlooker — July 24, 2007 @ 1:13 pm
Totally agree about decent and swearing, but consistency is needed. As you point out C.A. Foul language seems to be let go these days, however, cast your mind back to Burnie v Rangers at NTCA Chris Smith was sent off for that very thing. We had no idea what was going on didn’t hear anything from the bench, there was no chance the crowd heard it, and Chris had not been talked to at all prior to that. My guess is reputation had a fair bit to do with it, but he has been good this year and needs to be given a fair go.
There are a couple of new refs and Tony will be the best in our area I reakon. Is there any moderation done by the refs? It would be good if all refs acted in a similar manner to a given situation.
I reakon most players appreciate the refs but would ask for a little more consistency from ref to ref.
I would agree with zero decent, would make their jobs much easier, although there are one or two who seem to enjoy a little decent and even seem to innitiate it at times.
Comment by Hugo — July 24, 2007 @ 3:00 pm
interesting TONY! and even more the fact that I still dont know how to spell!
.
Do you have regular meeting with all referees to discuss problems and such? is you did I would assume that these issues would be brought up in a team inviroment! therefore dealing with them as a team and individuals would not feel so disheartened by the whole referees are hated issue!.
.
I know when I was a referee, and I was! At training after we went for a run and such Ross would do some rule reviews and the refs would discuss the issues of the round, problem players and issues that needed adressing. Back then the amount of refs going about was greater, and there was even an element of fun involved with being a referee, we felt like a team, young refs had mentors Ie I was coupled with gus like Tom Loomer and the late Oggie, these guys would support the young fellows like myself at the time and encourage us to continue, a few of my mentors went on to other things and at times I felt intimidated by players, at one point I seriously debated droping my flag and running into the bushes at Youngtown oval at a Stleonards V Launceston game i was so scared! Im sure there are players, infact i could name some, that make the juniors feel this way at times!
Comment by Captain Australia — July 24, 2007 @ 4:00 pm
Perhaps each club should ‘provide’ a certain number of referees each year? Not to officiate their own games but others. There’s potential for bias etc but at least it forces the clubs into some responisbility regarding refereeing.

BlackJack.
May I suggest a topic for discussion?
The possibility of the State premiership being played over a home and away format. I E when the Northern Champs play the Southern Champs. Would be interesting to see what the reaction would be to this. The reason I ask is one game is not enough to truly see who is the best side in the state, especially when the northern team must travel from as far away as Somerset, nearly 5 hours travel by bus, I think a home and away series should be introduced for this title.

We cant get past or present players interested in becoming Refs now so how and were are the clubs going to get them from.
One problem i see is that they dont want to be abused for example when i became a Ref this year i took a 15 yr old across with me he passed the exam just like i did but when he looked at his options he chose to play rather than be abused, So as Refs and clubs to we all have to try and change the way the Refs are looked at as without any Ofcials there will be probably no games and this we dont want to see. I gues i was lucky as i had a good mentor for me Becoming a Ref in Stephen Mcewan and it is a shame that a Ref with qualitys is no longer doing it as i feel we need people like Stephen still involved.
I think what we need to do up on the North West Coast is try and i mean try and get junior Ref programe in place were we teach young Refs how to Ref but we get them to do the Regional carnivals at Wynyard Ulverston and Devonport and us senior Refs are there to help in every way we can you only have to take a look at the Hobart program to see how well this works.

Captain Australia …I think you will find the State premiership was played as a two leg home and away format until recently and I like you think it would be good if it was again.
Going back many years I can remember a state league Grand Final played on a very wet muddy and boggy Grove Road and from memory an until then undefeated Devonport lost the one off state league final played at what was then considered the home of the state league.
The only negative to a two leg final is that once sides get to the end of their home and away league season North and South interest seems to drop off.Last years Final between Somerset and Knights was not as good a game as many others during the year..I suppose it comes down to sides getting serious about wanting to be the best in the state and not just in their region.
Also while here..Congrats to Tony it seems this week he is getting good wraps from around the North..
Word of caution though..A wise man many years ago put it this way…Your only as Good as your last game…
Remember Players and supporters have short memories
which is probably why Southern Referees get such a good response when venturing North they arent the Devils that people know and see week in week out.
Comment by interested spectator — July 25, 2007 @ 1:20 pm
If any one had heard the speech from Glenorchy coach after losing last years state final they would not be any doubt of the desire of his club to win this title . To them it was the be all and end all of their season. What a great honour to represent your club winning the state crown. Dont tell me that all players dont give their all on such an occasion if you think that you have probably never played in one. With so much pressure on the players its no wonder that some of these games are not top quality but if you seen last years final you would have enjoyed the intensity and drive of all the players. I for one saw the A league game with all its hype and thought it was crap.

i think the topic of referees is a tough one.i think there are some good new refs in the north .i also agree that they should be taken care of for obvious reasons. at somerset.s.c the players are told not to even talk to the ref on the field of play(unless it is the captain looking for claryfication on a decision).we have recently had two players yellow carded for dissent, so the refs arent tolerating it.we provide free coffees and after game food for the refs each and every home game.couldnt northern and southern refs be rotated between both leagues on a roster basis? With Ben Williams and Leigh Barry no longer refereeing there are not too many in the North , North/West who are willing to travel South. This has been a topic of discussion amongst referees and the Referees Standing Committee every year for at least the last seven years. At present there are a number of Southern referees who are prepared to travel to North and North West and when their availability coincides with an appropriate match they are utilised. No doubt if the numbers in North & North West can be improved then a more viable system of rotation will be possible. The numbers doing the courses are good in North at least - so hopefully they will be able to be converted into on-field refs.
