Rumour Mill

Filed under: Uncategorized — Blackjack @ 12:15 pm

Ok here’s the post a lot of you have been looking forward to all year. The comings and goings!!! The silly season. The creditable and the total BS. The believable and the just plain idiotic.

Who’s going where, why and how??

Are any players going to the mainland or are any coming back?

Go on, do your worst!!

I can start you off by stating Spinner has stood down at South Hobart but that’s nothing too surprising. Three names pop up as replacements: Eamonn Kelly, George Krambo & another I’m not sure about (or don’t wish to say).

Jon Ladic has also been linked with a move to South while South are rumoured not to be entering a Div.1 team in 2008.

Over to you guys. BTW, I won’t post the patently stupid posts! :-)

  1. I am sure those at south will be quick to confirm or deny the Div 1 rumour..however from an outsiders perspective it seems like a logical and sensible move preparing for 2009..If not true perhaps worthy of some serious thought.

Speaking of starting rumours I have heard the under 19’s face the axe with PL clubs north and south to field under 17 sides instead??

  2. If no under19’s then look out div 2-5, average age is about to drop. - or players too old for u17 but not good enough for reserves may disappear altogether. Interesting to hear the pors and cons that would have swayed such a decision. Might be a source for new referees perhaps?

    Comment by sj — September 24, 2007 @ 1:47 pm

  3. I would have thought it would make sense to have 18 then 21 plus say 3 overage and do away with reserves altogether at top level , but that maybe to forward thinking for most decision makers …

    Comment by Oncesackedcoach — September 24, 2007 @ 3:16 pm

  4. In the North we had U/18’s then ST changed to U/17’s then a few years back to U/18’s, where we were promised to play for at least ten years, no more changes, so hopefully we are not moving the age group again, as all clubs will lose players who are 18 but not quite up to reserves standards yet? What is the old saying, don’t change it if it aint broke.

By the way, the U/18 comp up here was the best standard i have seen yet, all teams have several future senior players in the making which can only be great news for all Northern clubs.

  5. Goran to return home, not necessarily the knights either. Beachside will lose a significant amount of their younger players aswell.

    Comment by Borat — September 24, 2007 @ 3:54 pm

  6. have any 2008 coaching positions been confirmed?

    Comment by sj — September 24, 2007 @ 5:31 pm

  7. I’ve heard the whisper ….

Dale Itchins to coach at south ??

….that will turn some heads …. probably get some results though

    Comment by shags — September 24, 2007 @ 7:34 pm

  8. Surely reserves coach Luke Atkin would have to be in the running for the top job after two successive reserves titles?

    Comment by Marcus A — September 25, 2007 @ 10:02 am

  9. Nah, he is giving up coaching to pursue a career.

    Comment by X — September 25, 2007 @ 10:33 am

  10. You would think Eamonn Kelly would be all over the South job.
He’d be chomping at the bit to coach full time again and unless Lapolla gives up the Zebras job i reckon that would be the only place he would go. The financial situation could be interesting there.
If Eamonn wants a decent salary for it will South give it? Id say Spinner and Robbo wouldnt have been getting much money there.
Robbo to take over at South again perhaps?
Would Kelly be willing to take on a struggling team like Taroona perhaps? Doubt it.
Interesting to see who Knights go for, reckon Ahmed Abdultam could be an outsider for that job. Parker and Krambo will probably put their hands up for it. Think Parker will stay at Eagles. Dont know why they would want to keep him though after two relatively poor seasons. It aint workin, time to change surely.
Will other old coaches such as Calvert/Previdi/Hey put their hands up? Think they are all too happy with the junior scene and will stay away.
    Is Ken Morton around still?
Farrel to stay on at Olympic.

    Comment by Juice — September 25, 2007 @ 10:47 am

  11. Robbo would be a good chance to take the reigns again for 08 at South Hobart I would expect. Dale Itchins would be a very obscure and poor choice in my opinion. I’ve also heard a whisper that Finals might be back on the agenda in 2008.

    Comment by D Train — September 25, 2007 @ 12:12 pm

  12. Corey Smith will coach Knights next year “SURELY”!!!

    Comment by Chaffey — September 25, 2007 @ 12:56 pm

  13. Dale Itchins a poor choice? Whats your reasons behind that call? I dont know if you have been coached by him, but if u had i think you’d have a very different view!

    Comment by DJ — September 25, 2007 @ 1:55 pm

  14. I dont think my old mate Blackjack would let me post my thoughts on the man in question so will reserve my judgement.

    Comment by D Train — September 25, 2007 @ 3:23 pm

  15. Here is a question. Will Krambo coach at a senior level again?

I heard he’s in for Knights, South, Taroona, Eagles, Uni…he loves us all!!! :-) BJ

    Comment by charlie white — September 25, 2007 @ 3:42 pm

  16. yeah your right Chaffey i will be coaching knights next year but the Under 14’s that is ;p

    Comment by Corey Smith — September 25, 2007 @ 3:56 pm

  17. I’ve heard on the grape vine that referee, Ivan J, has had trials with the FFA to enter their cadet program.

Also heard that a few premier senior players and key figures have discussed and looked into the option of creating a Division 1 side. Apparently they aren’t happy with their respective clubs and are looking at the financial and fiscal viability of creating a Div 1 side with ultimately the aim to look at promotion to the premiership. If the names I’ve heard are correct they’ll have no problems looking at a promotion!

    Comment by 1878 — September 25, 2007 @ 4:29 pm

  18. Djemba Djemba to play A-League!

    Comment by Coxy — September 25, 2007 @ 5:15 pm

  19. 1878 - will these people have enough clout to draw people to create a reserve and U19 side which will be required for any promotion?

They will also require three teams in Div.1 in 2009… BJ

    Comment by Tommy — September 25, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

  20. can any one see FFT giving a div 1 spot to a random group of players with obviously little management involvement (cos if they had they would surely be actively involved in their respective clubs and therefore able to mould the clubs to their desired direction!)

    Comment by dg — September 25, 2007 @ 6:24 pm

  21. much simpler to go to an existing div 1 club

    Comment by sj — September 25, 2007 @ 6:26 pm

  22. Well they did give a div 2 spot to Ethiotas dg, so I don’t know if they hold management as that much of a prerequisite… even gave them special treatment to break their policy on team names!

    Comment by Ril — September 25, 2007 @ 7:49 pm

  23. Juice, I think it’s time to let the Parker persecution go. It’s many years ago. Let it pass. Sparky will remain at Eagles you could almost stake your house on that one…unless Martin Jol becomes available all of a sudden.

I’d be surprised if Dale Itchins leaves that coushy job at FFT to return to the ‘real’ world of coaching. Indoor and youth are far more comfortable and Dale has more in common with 14-15 year olds than with adults!! :-D (pulling your leg Dale)

I’ll be interested in who could get the Taroona job. Could Mike McKenna kick off his coaching career in the Premier League? And what about Knights?? Heaven only knows what’ll go on there. It’s starting to resemble the Titanic…rats running everywhere!! Could this be the team that will enter Div.1 looking for promotion to SPL in 2009 :-)

Will David Smith make his long awaited return and take the reins at Zebras or will Chippa go one more year? Can Pullen’s tired on legs go again or will he be a chance for a coaching role, at Knights perhaps?? (if they offer him enough cash he could be tempted!!

    Comment by Blackjack — September 25, 2007 @ 11:28 pm

  24. I still think Eamon Kelly at Souths is a good bet…said so over a month ago. It would be the perfect team for him to show Knights why they should not have got rid of him and they already play a hard brand of football. Farrell will probably stay at Olympic, but you can’t bet on him saying he will and then doing it. Can’t see any reason why Zebra’s would even consider changing. Eagles should give Sparky another year…they have brought in some good kids and that takes time to gel. Kingborough…don’t know. Metro…whoever takes them on has a hard year in front of them. If I was at Taroona I would relish the challenge of trying to go one better and staying in the eight (assuming that happens of course). Finally, in all of these posts…no one mentioned Browny at Clarence. I propose there is a chance he will not coach them next year but I believe he will stay with the Club.

    Comment by A Whisper — September 26, 2007 @ 9:44 am

  25. Craig Macey is understood to be having some time off at Somerset, and we are currently advertising for a senior coach. They are a great bunch of youngsters (with maybe a few more players coming this way next year as well, but it is the “funny season”), is there any top aspiring coaches looking to get a top Northern team, if so they should apply, be nice if Nathan Robinson did :-), Rachael would be closer to home?

    Comment by Kevin Considine — September 26, 2007 @ 1:16 pm

  26. Very true AW, for taroona i reckon the hardest thing is staying up the second year. All that effort and committment for the first year is very hard to match again for the second year. How ever a few signings and they could easily close in the upper half. I heard Alex Gordon to taroona, good mates with Billy G.

    Comment by Borat — September 26, 2007 @ 2:59 pm

  27. Kelly at south, Krambo to coach whats left of the knights, status quo at Eagles,Olympic,Zebras and Uni ??? Browny or Edo at Clarence. No mention of the borough, does anyone care ???? Maybe Rhodesy at Metro ,Taroona a challenge for who ever gets the job, should do better than this year though!! Does anyone know of any player movements apart from half the knights team going to play else where as speculated on the blog since half way through the season??? My tip young Walsh to leave Clarence!!!

    Comment by one eyed — September 26, 2007 @ 5:47 pm

  28. Ken Morton at Clarence. Is that correct Andrew?? :-)

    Comment by Blackjack — September 26, 2007 @ 6:05 pm

  29. Hi one eyed. Anthony Rhodes is only 17 and played this year in the under 19’s and reserves. I don’t reckon he’s quite ready to step up to the senior coaching job at Metro.

one eyed is referring to his father Matthew not Anthony. :-) BJ

  30. “Old legs” ta BJ!!!!, Kelly would be good at Sth would bring some “bitch” to their play, also possibly two or three loyal knights boys into the mix.. Hopefully Sparky gets another round with eagles and the players step up for the club, Olympic? heard Farrell was going, if so a good coach could really do something there a lot of potential(more money on offer for Kelly??) Can’t see Browny leaving unless we wants a rest and Edo would step in one would think… Uni; about time Shep had a go, he’s not far off 40 now he would be good in charge….(and will hate me for saying it) Senior Kent for Mets(only way they will keep jnr… No change at Zebras with extra help next season(well thats what I’m hoping) If morton is back then the knights or taroona would be a good challenge for him… Charlie White for Kingbourgh (he’s done everything else captain, president and with his teaching skills would be a good player coach!!!! As for players Ladic to Sth? too many similar in midfield — he is always welcome to try out with us though!!!! will Gas stay at Taroona? (need a good coach to keep him one would think)I wonder what the Sth senior group would think about 3 or 4 knights following a kelly style coach??? maybe several moves from sth could be in the cards.. FOR THE RECORD I WILL NOT BE COACHING ANYWHERE(surprised if anybody would want me too) Hoping to play for a few more yet….. night all GO JUVE

  32. Sorry BJ just trying to lighten things up a bit with Rhodsey athough I reckon the young Rhodes has got about as much chance as his dad.

Brett seeing as your in the know can you tell us where Shane Kent is going if his dad is’t coach ?

  33. For the record I will be coahcing this year, the under 19s again, anything else would be a little premature. I don’t know how many years I have left in me but I am still to see anyone do the job of player coach of any team with better results than a stand alone coach.

    Comment by charlie white — September 27, 2007 @ 8:57 am

  34. Sorry One Eyed. It was fairy obvious. I tried to reply to one funny comment with another one but I guess it backfired. Next time I’l put the happy face on.

  35. there will not be as much movement at knights as everyone seems to think. Will be a few but also a few coming in but not saying who obviously. From what i gather from being mates with most of the boys mentioned is that it will all depend on the coaches Knights are able to recruit. Whether players liked Eamonn’s coaching or not he got discipline and had the team playing for each other and thats what the squad needs…… well done for the two huigy brothers who got thrown in the deep end last season but i think the squad needs a good tactical coach like a morton, previdi type (cant see those two but someone similarly minded tactically) that can teach some of these young boys coming through the 16’s and 19’s (majority will play senior soccer in the next 3 yrs).
A few new signings, A few youngsters from the 16’s and 19’s accompanied with the core group that are still there and i am sure the squad could be moulded by the right coach into a top half team this coming year and then challenge once more the year after…… atleast i hope so!! The perfect coach if available in my opinion would be greg calvert…. played in the under 23 state side under him and one of the better tactical coaches in my opinion!! Also does anyone know if Andrew Greenwood from the North West Coast is still floating about?? Very very good coach!!

  36. The mill certainly is active..even the chasers tried to get the premier on the mill but he wouldnt bite..Heard some interesting information at the TCA launch this week…I hear FFT may be considering copying TCA 8 club youth development structure which would see the 8PL clubs in 2008 not only fielding under 19’s but under 17’s and 15’s as well..If I understood the story correctly the youth component of Div 1 would be slightly relaxed (initially) in that clubs would only need to have one youth team and not in a specific age group..however over time they would be actively encoraged to field teams in under 18 and under 16 competitions. As the TCA youth development programme has produced the Pura Cup champions FFT might be on the right track if indeed they are exploring how it works??

  40. Mourinho to coach South in 2008. Every other coach in the business has been mentioned, why not ‘the special one’ too?

    Comment by KP — September 27, 2007 @ 3:54 pm

  41. Correct re Fletcher. Im sure he’s told everyone that he knows that is involved with the game.
His intellectual post match interviews will be missed (refer to the one after the Kingborough game).
Quite possible that Olympic will chase a decent central midfielder to replace him.

    Comment by Juice — September 27, 2007 @ 4:05 pm

  42. Shane Kent should contact Launceston and let them know early as possible as i have heard several of their better boys are off to other clubs next season, and a good signing may keep them there. They are young and can play, just inconsistent this year, Duffy is a future champion and would be sad to see him move to another club. Come on Launceston, get the boys on side and encourage them to stay, chase up some others don’t let others poach your better boys?

    Comment by Kevin Considine — September 27, 2007 @ 4:57 pm

  43. Spinner’s departure was abit of a surpise at South, and the committee would have welcomed him and Luke back for another season because they are both good, hard working and honest coaches and we will miss them. We will probably not have a Div 1 team next year and we are looking for a new senior coach, who will be appointed on merit. I apologise for my earlier comments and observations, I am a bad ‘boy’ sometimes.

  44. just read shermo’s comments in his interview with BJ

….interesting comments about coaches that helped make him the player he is today.

Dirk Gadd got a mention .. what’s his claim to fame in the coaching circles ??
Shermo gave him a big rap ….

DG even a mention in one of walters articles recently …… may be he’s the front runner for premier men ???

surely that would end his refereeing days ??

Shags, Gaddy has had a fairly lengthy history of coaching. I stand to be corrected but I believe his involvement with Shermo came when Dirk had the Southern Tas team and he may also have had one of the state U15 squads. Walter announced that Dirk would take on South Hobart’s Premier women in 2008. Dirk has also had a number of State women’s teams. BJ

  51. Haven’t seen your response yet Brett but you might have picked up that the only way Metro will keep Shane Kent is if they move the Human Movement course to the south. I don’t think even Tezza can organise that. I reckon your going to have to pay your informants a bit more.

    Comment by metbrigade — September 28, 2007 @ 11:28 pm

  52. Shane Kent would be more then welcome at Launceston City. He’s the type of player the club is all about, getting stuck in and playing with heart. No doubt he’d be a tremendous signing.

    Comment by Richardson — September 29, 2007 @ 7:46 am

  53. as i didn’t have informants re kent I’ll admit it was just a thought from what i had seen but if he is going north for study then Launceston City would be my pick for him. I have heard though that kelly will not coach, Previdi for knights, Ladic not south, and Morton not in tas, Telega to stay at eagles???? Krambo a youth team not seniors…. Oh and Man utd to win the EPL again!!!!!

Previdi is in discussions with both knights and south ( will not be involved with FFT next year !!!) Kelly has applied forSouth . Lapolla already signed with Zbas likewise with shaw and Parker at respective clubs both clubs want to keep current coaches , BJ mentioned Smith at Zebras word is that he is in discusion with his orginal club ( player life member) Metro ?.
Spinner at Taroona , Edwards will tke over at Clarence and will struggle to keep young and older players happy, Uni no idea,..
