Pieter Oosterloo (Riverside Olympic) Riverside Olympic’s Pieter Oosterloo took out the prestigious George Dale Medal at the Northern Football Federation of Tasmania’s annual award presentation at the Grand Chancellor, Launceston last night.

Despite the Riverside team finishing down the competition table Oosterloo managed to poll 21 points which was three ahead of Northern Ranger’s Thataetsile Kakadumane. ‘TT’  polled in second place with 18 points but was denied the official podium finish due to a suspension during the season. This left a three way tie for the official second place. Burnie United’s Ben Crosswell and Somerset brothers Bobby & Casey Eaves filled out the runner-up minor placing.

  1. who won the womens award?
    what other awards were there?

Who knows. If promotion of the game was left up to FFT you wouldn’t know any friggin’ thing. FFT sends out a media kit with numbers attached so you can ring coaches etc. and no one answers the God damn phone!!! Jeez. how difficult is it??

The only reason I’ve known about the George Dale medal and could post something on here was through Walter Pless. At least he cares enough to actually do some investigation to find out.

BTW…thanks FFT for sending me a copy of the media kit.

I’ve heard it said before and I have resisted the idea but it seems to be the frightening truth…this is purely a social league.

Most of the people who report on the game in this state are just about fed up. BJ

  2. I am just about fed up. FFT did the right thing by sending out a media release about the North v South game yet neither of the men’s coaches even bothered to answer the phone. I had to get the score from one of the substitutes! Neither coach bothered to return the call after a message was left.

When I asked what time the goals were scored, the substitute offered to ask the referee, who was standing nearby. When he asked the referee, the reply was “Oh, in each half”. Well, if that’s the sort of response the media can expect, why bother covering the games? I felt sorry for the substitute. He was genuinely trying to assist me.

And, I’m a soccer person, with a passion for the game. The media release was sent to TV stations and the ABC as well. If they got a similar response, they wouldn’t even bother covering soccer in the future. Perhaps that’s why WIN TV got the score wrong (they had 3-1 instead of 2-1).

The women’s coaches, on the other hand, were very cooperative. They answered their phones and gave quotes and other useful information. Well done Matthew and Jason.

With two games against South Australia coming up, why should I bother covering them if that’s the sort of cooperation I can expect? I am very, very disappointed. Perhaps I take the game too seriously. This latest incident seems to indicate that perhaps I do and that Tasmanian soccer is, after all, just a social competition.

It’s a shame it has to come to this when the person who has done as much, if not more than anyone else, to promote the game in this state has to feel like this. Some people really need to lift their game. I’m with you Walter and I empathise completely!!! BJ

  3. i was just asking in case someone from north / north west who attended might be able to let us know.

and isn’t that a sad indictment of the game here in this state (see Walter Pless comments as well), we have to rely on others to give us the news that should be on the FFT website first thing the next morning if not the same night that the awards are made.

It’s just Mickey Mouse stuff!! BJ

  7. I hear you werent on your own CA and that many had a good long night but then thats what award nights seem to be all about..As we know the best and fairest medal is voted on by the referees. I understand 2008 will be even tougher on this front as rumour has it the referee of the year, and at least 3 other PL referees are like walter pless and have had enough and considering giving it away.
I hear Peter Best (womens coach of the year) will be taking up the whistle..is their anyone else who will step up to the plate..The alternative is the coaches doing a half each??

I think Mr Parr will return to referee in 2008, but it is certainly rumoured that others will not.

Hopefully there will be a huge attendance at the next free referees course in Devonport on 3rd and 17th November, and some of those who graduate will take it up seriously.

  9. I.S., True i was not the only, one of the lads whom shall remain nameless was standing in the middle of the mens just walking around giving the place a hose down!!! was completly disgusting but highly ammusing at the same time!
    .
On a more relevant note,, great to see so many of the clubs respond to our invitation to join the rangers at their watering hole and sponsor the Northern Club. Members from City, Sharks, Strikers and Ulvie all poped in for a drink and it was most appreciated! goes to show that underneath it all, we have a great relationship with our competitors.
    .
try anttending an aussie rules league dinner and see how many can just enjoy each others company (without punching each others lights out!). was a testomony to the many great people we have with in our orginisation.
    .
Highly disapointed with the lake of support shown by Riverside, Launceston and Knights! I personaly only spotted one Launceston rep and he was at our table as a ranger, couldnt sight a Riverside player of any discription and the only knight there was their president the great Trout!

    Comment by Captain Australia — September 24, 2007 @ 1:54 pm

  10. I think its time to have the dinner on the North West coast! cause every club from there was well represented well while the host town from what I gathered only fielded 2 city tables, a ranger table and some odds and ends of what was left over in the corner! and our cab fair home would be no more than 20 bucks!

    Comment by Captain Australia — September 24, 2007 @ 1:57 pm

  11. Far be it for me to defend the knights guys but I understand a large number from the club was invited to a wedding same venue same time ..As for Launceston if they did have a rep it was one more than a couple of years ago when I hear their table was notable as the only one in the room set yet empty. you are right about the NW lads and ladies supporting these nights..perhaps no surprise my sources at Tilford Zebras only told me about the hospitality in the bar at the statewide premiership and left out the news on the hostilities on the field..I am sure if the video is aired at the Vic tuting it will produce more than a few oooos…

FFT would have posted all the presentation results by now, wouldn’t they :).

James Nettleton, (golden boot winner) from Somerset was runner up in the reserves, (poor bugger played last 4 weeks as senior keeper when Hoary went interstate for work), but the winner from Rangers was outstanding both games i saw.

Chelsea Smith won the womens (she is all class), and dressed the part on the night as well :), not sure who was second but believe it to be another City player, they were all fantastic to watch play, something for other Northern womens teams to aspire too.

Burnie’s Michael Grey won the U/18’s from two Shark boys, Sam Phillips/Crole, then Jordan Wright.

***Might be more on that later when things settle back down at FFT after their “big weekend”.

PS The Sharks men won the Golden Boot Award in all three mens divisions. Bobby Eaves Seniors, James Nettleton Reserves and Gary Hamilton U/18’s.

It was a good night, but gee it took a while to get a drink, i think a couple of CA’s boys spent the whole night at the bar :) on ya Sammy.

  13. IS - The highlight package shown of the Zebra’s v Somerset clash in no way showed a true indication of the way the game was played. Yes there was some fierce tackling by both teams (to be expected in a state final i would have thought). Both sets of players got on really well after the game and Brett and co loved the way the game was played, it was like a Derby match, with vocal spectators, stirring on a few Zebra’s, played at a fast pace, and with some great passages of play, but definitely not one of our better games.

The better team won on the day, the Zebra’s wanted it more and passed better and finished their chances, they were terrific.

However my big criticism, is that the highlights on Thursday, and at the Northern dinner the game highlights only concentrated on some fierce play that occurred during the match, (no leg breaking tackles, just body clashes etc) and not some of the better passages of play. It makes our states football look ugly to say the least and was extremely disappointing to witness the “tough stuff” showed over and over again at our dinner, even though it evoked cheers from the audience, but where was some of Pullen’s magical passes, and Brazendale’s turn of speed and the near misses from both teams?

I guess that is what some people like, not me or our club though, we strive to play the ball around as quickly as possible, but we have had a reputation at being too soft in past years and the boys now assert themselves to make sure we are not “hacked down” as in years gone bye.

Ask for the full version, and you will see a tough State Final, played with passion and skill, it was an exciting game and a credit to both teams (who are the best in our state), even though it never really reached great heights and may not have been the best either side has played all year.

  16. Congrats to Oosterloo good player and good bloke! He is a talented player but there are many as talented if not more talented players who have yet to win one…Wasn’t there on the night but im not sure how he could have polled so many in a losing team. Must be something about him that catches the eye of the man in the middle.
It took the FFT 3 days to publish the bare results on the net. Does anyone know how one would go about finding how a lad and his mates went in their respective counts? Is emailing FFT a lost cause? Or should i simply have gone on the night.

Write to FFT. What have you got to lose?? BJ
