apparently there is more than one surprise!
Comment by sj — October 11, 2007 @ 10:20 pm
to be honest i will be very suprised if one of two players doesnt win it.
brett pullen and tom roach are both stand out players who will always attract referees attention and both play in good teams.
However if a suprise is in the making i wouldnt mind a dollar or two on danny lapolla. has been invited from zebras so therefore a chance, and had an outstanding season for zebras.
interestingly not one of the zebras players who made the state team got invited tonight. all four i think can consider themsleves unlucky.
any info on who got invited from each club?
Comment by mickey — October 12, 2007 @ 8:23 am
On face value you would say the winner would be a Pullen, Roach, Beecroft, Lo, Huigsloot but don’t be surprised to see a Cannamela, Iseli, Pitchford, Fagg or even Mason to pop up. Alexis Bull to poll we too but injury will prevent him from winning it.
Comment by Blackjack — October 12, 2007 @ 9:24 am
just a small correction to invitees blackjack.
my sources tell me ricky self was the third invited from zebras, not henry. could be wrong. wouldnt be the first time.
Comment by mickey — October 12, 2007 @ 9:33 am
There must be 2 lists BJ. I hope the winner is there!
Comment by Peter Pearce — October 12, 2007 @ 10:32 am
I believe Mickey is right re Self for Fagg, a big surprise that Fagg, Maniella and Smith were not the three from Juve but hey refs see things different…. Would still like to see a players player award for season !!!. Quick tip from me Chippa for coach of the year, and i recon Roach for three in a row , Bull my outsider…..
Comment by bpullen — October 12, 2007 @ 11:00 am
Wee man Bulis a good bet, he scored 2 hat tricks and a couple other 2 goal games - will probably fall a bit short given he missed a couple games. Won the reserve medal years ago after missing the first 5 or so games.
Interesting to see if its high polling award, Shep won with 30+ a couple years back, last year from memory it was 18.
Reckon 5-6 will be all around the 16-18 votes. Another tied award possibly.
Blackjack with the laptop tonight… does that mean we all get to know finally WHO you are!
Comment by Juice — October 12, 2007 @ 11:44 am
I stand corrected but didn’t Alex Gorden Get an invite???
Comment by Hotshot — October 12, 2007 @ 12:23 pm
BJ,
I agree there must be 2 lists. Neil Biggar would be chuffed to know he was invited, particularly when he would have read that in Walter’s column this morning. Unfortunately he wasn’t, Adam McKeown was the 3rd invitee from Metro.
Comment by Greg Saunders — October 12, 2007 @ 12:26 pm
yeah i was under the understanding knights invitees were benny peter, jaydan wiggins and fishy? That came from a reliable source but it is fairly insignificant i think in the winning of the award anyway.
Cant see it going outside pullen, roach or beecroft and if it does then referees should be stripped of their voting rights… ;P lol
Comment by Corey Smith — October 12, 2007 @ 12:57 pm
I feel a bit sorry for Walter here. It is obvious he (and BJ) have been given incorrect information. With all the efforts he has put in through the year one would think he deserves accurate information to report upon. If the incorrect information has been supplied to him someone needs to put their hand up and take TOTAL responsibility. We must support fully those who are promoting the game in their own valuable time. Likewise I hope clubs have been given the correct names to invite. Only time will tell!
Comment by Peter Pearce — October 12, 2007 @ 2:45 pm
One can only presume that a new series of spy gate is being planned over tonights medal - one list to Walter another to the clubs - bit like buying a lottery ticket .
Had hoped that Frank Mainella would have had a chance but as he doesn’t appear to have got an invite on anybody’s list be a bit hard pressed to win !! again what would refs know !! always easy to give to a goalscorer or the guy that shakes you hand at the end telling you what a great game you had !!
Congrats to all winners hope BJ and friends have a great night .
Comment by Oncesackedcoach — October 12, 2007 @ 5:54 pm
wooo i got 10 points in the last 4 senior games havin played 6-7 senior games all year lol
Comment by Aaron Marney — October 13, 2007 @ 12:50 am
Congrats to the winner…Well done Bart!
What happened with the lists? Did FFT strike again?
Walter works extremely hard for this sport and their is NO excuse for him receiving one list and the clubs another. I really hope that it was an accident however. I know Walter had some harsh words said to him about something he wrote earlier this year. They surely wouldn’t deliberately give him the wrong info…would they?
Comment by A Whisper — October 13, 2007 @ 11:40 am
I just went to have a look at the FFT website too. Good job BJ has the results…because they ain’t on the FFT site. Must all be too tired after all the work from last night
Comment by A Whisper — October 13, 2007 @ 11:42 am
Bj- is there any chance of getting a round by round vote getters list for every game up? be interested to see who votes in which games.
Comment by Corey Smith — October 13, 2007 @ 2:30 pm
I think I was given the incorrect list. I phoned Martin Shaw on Friday afternoon and asked him about the discrepancies and he was as puzzled as I was. He was very apologetic and I accepted that. He said he could only assume he’d accidentally sent me an earlier version. When I phoned him earlier in the week and asked him for the list, Kenneth wasn’t at the office and so Martin sent me a list he found and which he genuinely believed was the final and correct list.
Unfortunately, I was ill on the night of the presentation - the first I’d missed in about 27 years - and so I don’t know if some ‘wrong’ people showed up. Was Bart there? I hope he was so that he could collect the medal. Congratulations to all the winners in the various categories.
Comment by Walter Pless — October 13, 2007 @ 2:50 pm
well done to bart!!!!!!!!!! can anyone tell me how many games Saad played???? well done to him too
Comment by Hotshot — October 13, 2007 @ 3:24 pm
Interesting to note that a player who is also a referee won the Division One medal, and another came second by one vote in the Women’s Premier League….
I can’t think of any other referees involved in the top leagues that receive votes other than these 2, so is it merely a coincidence that the referees eligible had good years as players? Or is it a case of being more familiar/noticeable to those giving out the votes?!
Comment by Ril — October 13, 2007 @ 4:36 pm
Ril,
A little harsh on hanna …..haven’t seen bill play.
hanna has made several state teams, southern teams and is probably one of the best defenders going around.
Congrats to hanna on getting so close!
No surprise for me!!
Comment by shags — October 13, 2007 @ 6:20 pm
BJ,
may i request a similar round by round for the women
….if thats available?
Comment by Dirk Gadd — October 13, 2007 @ 6:25 pm
Ril,
As a former state coach, I can assure you that hanna is the best defender in the state !!
Great understanding of the game, and very good skills.
Hanna has been a stand out at nationals and in the league.
Congrats on a great year hanna, just rewards for your hard work!!
see you in 2008
Comment by Dirk Gadd — October 13, 2007 @ 7:33 pm
Ril saad is also a referee.
Comment by sj — October 13, 2007 @ 9:49 pm
Bill Hanley certainly caught the eye when he played DOSA both times, and he scored 11 goals for the season.
Comment by Steve Pitchford — October 13, 2007 @ 10:04 pm
I wasn’t having a shot at Hanna, I agree that she is a good player, I’ve seen a few of their games, and she was probably best on ground 2 of the times, and had an impact the other times. A very good sweeper/controlling defender type in the games I saw.
Was just wondering out loud whether it was a coincidence that the only 2 referees (i know of) eligible for any of the awards voted by fellow referees finished 1st and 2nd respectively.
Comment by Ril — October 13, 2007 @ 11:01 pm
Further to that last post, Bill Hanley won by 6 pts, on a total of 19pts, from a team that finished 7th out of 9 teams, and only won 4 games for the year…. does that not seem a bit odd to anyone else?!
Again, it’s not a shot at Bill though, just I don’t think I’ve ever seen a winner by that margin, from a team that finished that low anywhere before. Although of course it could be why they finished low (few good players) compared to the higher teams that maybe had a more even team performance in their games..
Comment by Ril — October 14, 2007 @ 12:26 pm
Agree with steve,
I think Bill was a standout in all the games i saw.
However he constantly argues with refs and this has always cost other players in the past of recieving votes.???
Comment by the real bob — October 14, 2007 @ 1:38 pm
I think being a referee, or being know by the referee fraternity always gives you an edge with the voting. Bill is a player that tries hard, and stands out in a mediocre team, so when Nelson get a result (draw or win) or they go down fighting, his votes may be justified. But he isnt the best player in the Div 1 league by a long shot, he wouldnt be in the top 10~15 players in that league, and that not a direct insult to him or is ability, its just how it is, he would struggle to get a game in the top 2 sides. In regards to voting is it a case of the stronger teams players taking votes from each other, maybe? But this guy polled 18 or so votes in a team that won 3-4 games? A game he received 2 votes in, a 5-0 loss @ Beachside, he nor his team hardly touched the ball all day. You can try hard, but how do you get 2 votes for that? It makes you wonder…………………..
Comment by Flange Gasket — October 14, 2007 @ 2:47 pm
Billy Jones easily won a Rothmans Gold medal and he played for the team that finished last. There are many ’strange’ 3,2,1 vote combinations in all of the leagues - as is always the case. The top 3 teams Beachside, South & Kingborough had even teams with no standout individuals so its not surprising a good player from a weaker team comes out on top.
Comment by Steve Pitchford — October 14, 2007 @ 5:34 pm
To an earlier post from Hotshot, Saad played all games except one or two, also was coach of reserves. He also took up refereeing this year although he came 2nd last year with about the same number of votes.
Bill Hanley played a few games for Olympic seniors about 4-5 years ago.

Can I get a seconder on this list, I did a quick count to see the top 5 for Div1:
7W. Hanley (NEL) 18pts 1st
R. Franklin (SHBT) 13 pts 2nd
B. Davis (BS) 12 pts 3rd
T. McDonald (KLION) 12 pts 3rd
R. Korn (DOSA) 10 pts 4th
M. Rahni (METRO) 10 pts 4th
5. Margetts (KTC) 9 pts 5th
Comment by The_lads_got_talent — October 15, 2007 @ 6:42 pm
How did Rahni and Korn get 10 pts is behind me..Where’s Kavanagh??
Comment by motherafrica — October 15, 2007 @ 8:01 pm
Like I said, it was a quick list, I was hoping someone had actually tallied up the points, I’ve been looking for top ten lists but you only get top two or three every where you look. The only option is too count back and I honestly wasn’t going to spend an afternoon doing that (Hoping someone with more time had!)
Comment by The_lads_got_talent — October 15, 2007 @ 9:45 pm
Just luck I guess, considering I missed out on three games. Maybe I got points for going to Metro?
Comment by Mohand Rahni — October 15, 2007 @ 9:48 pm
Referring back to the list of players sent to Walter, the one to the clubs was also apparently interesting. One Club I am reliably informed received a list for U19’s that included as an invitee to the dinner a player who did not receive 1 vote in that competition. Does this mean there were actually 3 lists….one to Walter….one to the Clubs …and the right one. (Thinks; I wonder if the lists sent to the clubs were all the same)
Comment by A Whisper — October 16, 2007 @ 7:00 am
Congratuations to Bart - well deserved. Well done to all the other winners and players. Spinner has now coached 3 Vic Tuiting Medal winners in row. Has anyone else done this? It was great to have the video clips at the presentation, hopefully the DVD will not be too far away.
Comment by Peter Pearce — October 16, 2007 @ 7:12 am
A vote of gratitude to Jeremy Arnold and his team at WIN TV for the coverage of the Vic Tuting. The coverage was quite substantial and top quality. Well done Jeremy.
With TV coverage secured future winners will need to be aware of their physical state when accepting their medallions. It won’t do to see a drunken sot staggering all over the stage, something that has been a negative feature in some presentations (not the Vic Tuting winners I might add) over the past few years.
Comment by Blackjack — October 16, 2007 @ 7:33 am
Maybe Spinner has played a bigger part than you think. Wasn’t he heavily involved in the junior/youth development ranks there for a while? Would they not have been coached by him then? Or am I completely off target here?
Comment by Tommy — October 16, 2007 @ 8:14 am
I was most interested to see the debate about referees voting for other referees in medal counts..From my years of watching the game around the country..you could always tell the referees as they were the ones booked for dissent and rarely polled well..However when looking down the list at NTE best and fairest (assumingly voted by those at his club) I couldnt help but notice the name Jacob Malakoff…I think you will find he is also a promising referee..Perhaps the conspiracy theories can be put aside.
Comment by interested spectator — October 16, 2007 @ 9:48 am
Correct Tommy and he still is heavily nvolved with the juniors
Comment by Peter Pearce — October 16, 2007 @ 10:07 am
I agree Blackjack whilst Spinner has had heavy involvement in their careers at South, his claim to fame at having coached the last 3 Vic Tuting winners isnt very substantial as my Great Aunt could have done the same Job i would expect and she doesn’t speak English. Be Interesting to see the coaching Merry-Go Round in the off season.

Hardly a fair call D Train Spinner has for a long time been involved at South Hobart..I am sure the side has not coached itself over the past few years and the fact that so many young talented players have chosen to play under him does say something. Many other talented players at lesser clubs have moved on seeking titles with better sides and coming up short on the individual honors.. I hope he enjoys the year off and it will be interesting to see if his replacement can produce a 4th Vic Tuting Silver medalist.
Comment by interested spectator — October 16, 2007 @ 12:28 pm
Interested Spectator i wasn’t denying the fact that Spinner has assisted with developing these guys more stating that South Hobart has a plethora of talented players that would have won the Vic Tuting whether Spinner was Coach or not. Coaches only do so much.
Comment by D Train — October 16, 2007 @ 1:28 pm
Cormac Collins was majorly underdone in my opinion. 5 votes didn’t show who the real shining light was for the Eagles this year
Comment by makeeka — October 16, 2007 @ 2:52 pm
Billy Gasparinatos polled 14 votes but didn’t get an invitation, which I understand was because he received 5 yellow cards during the season and was therefore ineligible. Can anyone confirm this is correct? I would have thought you would only be ineligible if you actually got a red card rather than for accumulating yellows.

Thanks for the lists Tommy!
Comment by The_lads_got_talent — October 16, 2007 @ 5:17 pm
D train, spinner has coached them in the past and has helped them to get where they are now. also even though spinner didn’t win a premiership (as a coach) he has made them place in the last couple of seasons (i stand corrected?????) ( second this year by 1 point and third on goals last year) Any news on the coaching positions at South???? ( off the subject but hey)

Bart, Top effort mate.
Unsure of Knights votes as spent a bit of time on their bench but noticed that Janko failed to get a single vote.
Very interesting- what possibly could be in the referees drink bottles or does he rub them up the wrong way.
He did get sent off during the season but not to get a single vote.
Your thoughts.
Rocket
Comment by rocket0030 — October 16, 2007 @ 7:24 pm
I was always under the impression that you were only ineligible if sent off!! surely you wouldn’t make a player ineligible for 5 cards ?
Reckon wrong list went to Taroona !!
Comment by sent off — October 16, 2007 @ 8:22 pm
Rocket - he’s not alone, Peter Tsakiris is arguably the best defender around and rarely gets a vote, although has won about 6 bnf’s. Another in that same category include Aaron Brazendale who probably set up half of Zebras goals this year and only polled a few.
Some referees like certain type of players, i could see patterns with one selecting goalkeepers constantly and Kim probably gave Beecroft 75% of his votes but thats the way it goes. The few votes i got where also all from the same referee. One Eagle player polled some votes after having a hat-trick scored directly on him in the first half, i found that the most amusing one and i dont think the hat-trick boy was impressed.
Colin Shep was given an absolute bath by Rob Lebski, got beat 5-0, didnt stop whinging to the referee all game, but still polled a couple votes.Poor Hat-trick boy missed out again in that one.
Quite surprised that Eagles could poll only a few votes less in total than Olympic given Eagles won 2 games, Olympic 11.
Zebras too, well behind South, also surprising given Zebras won most of their games very convincingly.
Anyway, that’s just me thinking out loud. Time to think about 2008
Comment by Juice — October 16, 2007 @ 8:51 pm
Sorry Rahni didn’t want to offend you or Korn but Beachside were the best side in Div 1. How come they’ve got only one player in the top 5??
The golden ball and the FIFA player of the year aren’t voted by referees….we probably should look at an alternative at the current system.
Are the best players the winners??
For me best player in Pl was Fagg and kavanagh in Div 1.
Comment by motherafrica — October 16, 2007 @ 10:29 pm
Mother africa is right we should look at an alternative at the current system. A referees job is to control the game..some do it better than others..Its therefore hardly logical to ask the person who spent the game looking for players being un fair to name the fairest player.
If both coaches named 3-2-1 on the opposing side you might get closer to finding the best player..after all each coach hopefully knows who has played well as they have had to try and counter the players influence..That said many coaches spend so much time focusing on what the referee is doing perhaps this system wouldnt work either.
Comment by interested spectator — October 17, 2007 @ 10:35 am
I think we need 4 awards-gk, def, mid, fwd
after that an overall player, then we courld recognise those who deserve to be recognised
Comment by charlie white — October 17, 2007 @ 11:23 am
No disrespect to Saad Mohammad but he isnt the best player in the reserves league, he referees too. I think a Club’s B & F has more weight than the Vic Tuting. For example a bloke I know scored 4 goals in a 4-3 win didnt get one single vote??? now that is ridiculous and there must be a lot of other examples like this. I agree Interested Spectator use the coaches 3-2-1’s and keep the refs out of it.
Comment by D Train — October 17, 2007 @ 1:06 pm
D train just because “some bloke” scored four goals does not make them best on ground!!!! four goals is ok but wouldn’t someone get more votes more being a team player and setting them up????
Comment by Hotshot — October 17, 2007 @ 2:06 pm
well Hotshot i agree that the player setting them up should be rewarded but if you score 4 goals u should get at least 1 vote as a minimum I think most on here would agree with that notion.
Comment by D Train — October 17, 2007 @ 2:50 pm
Looking at the detailed results, I’m not sure many of the referee’s know what to look for when voting for “Best” and “Fairest”. I had to laugh when I found out I got votes in a game where I was booked for dissent
At least some referee’s don’t bare grudges I guess.
Comment by Jackblack — October 17, 2007 @ 2:53 pm
Looks to me like we’re saying some people got votes when they shouldn’t have, and, some people got votes when they should. probably equals out.
I wonder if we had a blog site 50 years ago or whatever when we started giving out B&F for Soccer, Aussie Rules, Hockey etc whether people would have been complaining about the same thing ? I reckon yes and no. Yes people would have got votes that shouldn’t, yes people didn’t get votes that should, but, no, I don’t reckon the players back then fretted and played for the love of the game and not material awards.
Maybe 50 years ago today’s common saying “get over it” was around ??
Comment by metbrigade — October 17, 2007 @ 8:09 pm
I think everyone deserves their points, and it’s a bit much to name players and say “they aren’t the best in the league, why did they get best and fairest”. Do players vote better than referees? I don’t reckon, in fact I think there is more favoritism especially towards goal scorers as D’Train provides a classic example. It dosn’t matter who casts the votes there is always going to be bias.
I think it would be interesting to have an award such as the FIFA player of the year were coaches from every club cast a vote at the end of the year, as opposed to each game.
Comment by The_lads_got_talent — October 17, 2007 @ 10:47 pm
Lads got talent has got a point..perhaps the coaches of every club could cast votes and the end of the year as they did for referee of the year and coach of the year..Few would argue Lapolla and Barker
were the best in their respective fields..
Comment by interested spectator — October 18, 2007 @ 5:58 am
IS & The Lad - Bart certainly deserved his medal.
Comment by Peter Pearce — October 18, 2007 @ 12:54 pm
Juice, Bart didnt not get 75% of his votes for Kim….. South Hobart only had him a couple of times!!!!! WELL DONE BART WELL DESERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by Hotshot — October 18, 2007 @ 7:20 pm
Peter Pearce ..sorry if you got the impression I thought Bart didnt deserve to win..truth is I only saw a handful of games and have no idea who was and wasnt playing well throughout the year..That said I dont think referees are the best judges or best players..Most people on this blog have expressed at some time the sentiment that apart from 1 or 2 Tasmanian referees know very little…(I dont concur with their thoughts ) I do think there must be a better way to arrive at the
best and fairest player in the league..Also whilst on the topic several years ago a players player of the year was awarded..how or why did that go by the wayside..it was a great concept which may just have been too difficult to arrange.
Comment by interested spectator — October 19, 2007 @ 8:40 am
Interested Spectator- It should not be too hard to organise, a general post out to all players who played over 50% of games giving a 5,4,3,2,1 etc. I’m sure the Electoral Commission would be able to set it up to stop vote rigging etc.
